Summary Statement

The City of Boise is seeking passionate and caring individuals to join its Adaptive Recreation Team . As an Adaptive Rec Leader, you will lead programs, camps and/or events for adults with disabilities at community centers and out in the community. This role assists the supervisor and staff in coordinating safe, fun and appropriate activities. Work is performed using independent judgment and discretion. Positions available:

  • Adaptive Recreation Leader - Wheelchair Sports
    • Pays $15/hr
    • Works Saturdays from 1:00-8:00 pm
    • Position begins in September and has the possibility of continuing into the new year
  • Adaptive Recreation Instructor
    • Pays $20/hr
    • Works Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:25-5:15 pm

    Essential Functions

    Adaptive Recreation Leader - Wheelchair Sports: Leads groups of adults with disabilities involved with Boise parks and recreation's adaptive recreation program on pre-established activities and outings in the community such as bowling, sporting events, movies, dinner, dances, etc. Assists supervisor and staff in coordinating safe, fun and appropriate activities. Will be required to drive a 12-or 15-passenger van to transport participants to/from activities. (50%)

    Ensures the safety of the participants while in the community. Properly manages money for group activities in the community. (20%)

    Occasionally works one-on-one with individuals with disabilities so they can fully integrate into parks and recreation programs. (10%)

    Acts as liaison between parks and recreation and activity destinations. (10%)

    Adaptive Recreation Instructor: Instructs classes for youth or adults with intellectual disabilities in the fields of cooking, dance, music, art or fitness. (45%)

    Leads groups of individuals with disabilities in a community setting. Drives the 15-passenger van. Ensures the safety and well-being of clients. Recognizes and redirects client misbehavior. Properly manages money for group activities in the community. (45%)

    Works one-on-one with individuals with disabilities so they can fully integrate into Boise Parks and Recreation programs. (10%)

    Requirements

    Adaptive Recreation Leader - Wheelchair Sports-$15.00
    Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
    • 6 months of experience volunteering or working with individuals with disabilities
    Knowledge of:
    • Best practices for, teaching an individual with an intellectual or physical disability
    Ability to:
    • Provide instruction to youth and adults with disabilities
    • Communicate and establish rapport with participants of all ages and ability levels
    • Communicate with the public, coworkers and supervisors in a friendly and tactful manner
    • Recognize and redirect misbehavior
    • Use strong human relations and organizational skills
    • Display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations
    • Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
    • Complete assignments in a timely fashion
    • Understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations
    • Maintain prompt and regular attendance
    • Perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without reasonable accommodation
    • Operate vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record
    Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
    • 1 year of experience working with individuals with disabilities and teaching classes or leading programs with multiple participants
    • Possession of current certification in CPR/First Aid
    Licensing And Other Requirements
    • Valid Idaho driver's license
    Special Requirements
    Applicants must be able to pass:
    • City of Boise background check processes includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation
    • Driving Record Check
    • Drug-Free Workplace: In accordance with the City of Boise Drug-Free Workplace Regulation, this position is designated as safety sensitive and is subject to testing requirements including Post Offer Applicant Testing, Random Testing, Reasonable Suspicion, Post-Accident, etc. Applicants will be required to submit to screening for illegal drug use prior to hire. Appointment to this position is contingent upon a negative pre-employment drug test.
    This position has responsibilities that require the person to work with minors or individuals with disabilities.


    Adaptive Recreation Instructor-$20.00

    Must meet all requirements of the Adaptive Recreation Instructor and:
    Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
    • 1 year of experience volunteering or working with youth or individuals with disabilities
    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
    Knowledge of:
    • Subject matter such as cooking, dance, drumming, art or fitness
    • Inclusion techniques that work well with youth or adults with intellectual disabilities
    Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
    • 2 years of experience working with individuals with disabilities and 2 years of experience teaching classes or leading programs with multiple participants
    Licensing And Other Requirements
    • Must be 18 years of age or older

      • While performing the duties of this job the employee is rarely lifting/carrying up to 20 pounds. Also, the employee is always pushing/pulling up to 10 pounds. The noise level is always moderate. Work includes the sensory ability to talk and hear. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception. Employees will sit, stand, and walk.
    • Working Environment
      • The work environment will include inside conditions and outdoor weather conditions. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Will be leading programs inside of community centers and outside.
    Adaptive Recreation Leader - Wheelchair Sports:
