Job Summary

The Administrative Assistant / Cashier is the main contact for patients scheduling walk-in appointments, providing insurance information, and checking out. The cashier must have the knowledge, experience, and customer service skills to assist the patient while also following Student Health Center guidelines for eligibility to be seen, insurance coverage and options for billing the bursar. Decisions must be made quickly and accurately with the information provided by the student and verified on the Student Health Center computer systems. This position assists patients with all aspects of registration and check-out including verifying patient eligibility, student status/demographic information, scheduling appointments, accepting payment (cash, check, credit or Bursar transfer), maintaining a secure cash drawer and balancing it daily, and collecting/verifying student insurance information. Duties also include setting up accounts to bill insurance when appropriate. This position is responsible for ensuring students are aware of and have received our Notice of Privacy Practices. The Administrative Assistant/Cashier serves as a liaison between staff, patients, and parents by answering questions regarding services and billing by phone and in person. Providing a high level of customer service is essential.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.

Excellent organizational skills. Strong verbal communication and listening skills. Effective interpersonal skills. Maintains a high degree of professionalism. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications

One year or more of office experience, preferably in health care. Cash handling experience. Familiarity with medical terminology and health insurance. Must be thorough and dependable. The ability to learn and work in multiple computer systems with a high degree of accuracy in a fast-paced environment while providing excellent customer service.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer, computer systems, and other standard office productivity equipment, including credit card terminals. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
