Position Summary

The Global Animal Welfare Compliance Principal Scientist is responsible for supporting the Zoetis mission by applying strong knowledge of international, national, state, and local animal welfare regulations, including the U.S. Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations, and EU Directive 2010/63. The Principal Scientist will use this knowledge to ensure global alignment with Zoetis expectations for animal welfare, including alignment with our Corporate Policy on Animal Care and Welfare, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research, Testing, and Teaching, and other corporate policies.

Position Responsibilities:

Provide strategic leadership to ensure the overall success of global animal welfare regulatory compliance at Zoetis for research, testing, teaching, and production. A primary responsibility is quality assurance and database management regarding continuous improvement and remediation plans for site- based animal care and use programs, as well as contract-based work.

Lead and participate on various global animal welfare teams that work to maintain high standards of animal welfare compliance, including AAALAC accreditation. Lead and participate in regulatory inspections/site visits as needed, including government and internal audits, as well as AAALAC site visits. Build cross-functional global animal care networks across business units to promote corporate standards of animal welfare, in a rapidly growing and diversifying multinational company.

In addition, lead and participate in global staff training, pro-active engagement with Zoetis staff involved in animal testing to promote animal welfare and care, establish and monitor metrics to track the progress of animal welfare and care programs at Zoetis sites, monitor animal welfare international regulations to ensure compliance of local programs, and be an advocate of the Zoetis Culture of Care. Also, continue to develop the Zoetis 3Rs program.

Additional responsibilities include preparing global guidelines and procedural documents, and once approved, ensuring global compliance with guidelines and policies. Quality database management, including timely review and approval of animal welfare documentation is essential.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Requirements: DVM (or equivalent). 10 years' experience in a biomedical research setting, with a working knowledge of animal facility operations and regulatory requirements governing animal research.

Demonstrated ability to build cross-functional global animal care networks across business units to promote high standards of animal welfare and a Culture of Care. Ability to function as a teammate in a highly regulated compliant environment.

Ability to work outside of the regular business hours to connect with Zoetis colleagues worldwide.

Demonstrated excellent organization skills and attention to quality management, and animal welfare auditing skills including defining and resolving management action plans.

Effective communication skills (oral and written) to work with a diverse spectrum of colleagues and external affiliates at all levels. Excellent written skills to develop guidelines and policies. Experience conducting animal welfare training in a multicultural environment.

Preferred: Experience working with Animal Welfare federal regulators (APHIS-USDA Animal Care); Prior experience as an APHIS USDA-AC Veterinary Medical Officer; ACLAM board certification; Preferred experience working with ETS and TrackWise, or other Quality Management system.
