Assistant/Associate Professor in Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery, Academic Clinician

Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Open Date:
May 24, 2022
Description:

The Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania invites applications for an associated faculty position in Small Animal Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery. This position will be in the Academic Clinician (AC) track at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Members of faculty in the Academic Clinician (AC) track are devoted to clinical service (42 weeks a year) in the Matthew J Ryan Veterinary Hospital and participate in the clinical instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents. Time away from clinical service is used for professional development, study for board preparation (if needed), citizenship to the Department, and didactic teaching.  Developing or maintaining an independent scholarship or research is not a focus of the AC track, is not a requirement for reappointment or promotion, and should not detract from excellence in clinical service and teaching.  Faculty AC positions are long-term, non-tenured Associated Faculty positions with reappointment every three years.  Promotion along the ladder of the University Academic ranks is available. The successful candidate is expected to have a history of or potential as an exemplary clinician and educator.

The successful candidate will join PennVet's Section of Small Animal Neurology Service, which includes a Full Professor in Neurology in the tenure track, one Associate Professor and one Assistant Professor in the academic clinician track, a dedicated nurse, and three residents. Penn Vet offers an opportunity to practice in a cutting-edge academic service within a busy urban academic teaching hospital staffed with specialists in all areas. PennVet is an exciting intellectual environment with outstanding residents and senior clinicians including faculty boarded in oncology, surgery, radiology, anesthesia, critical care, and clinical pathology. Dedicated medical physics support is provided through the University of Pennsylvania's healthcare system. Imaging modalities include a 16-slice CT and 1.5T MRI. The proximity to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine provides ample opportunities for collaboration and consultation for unusual cases or research opportunities.

The University provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, which includes multiple options for retirement savings and tuition benefits for the candidate's spouse or dependent children. This is an outstanding opportunity for an individual who enjoys working in a vibrant urban environment with an abundance of cultural resources, including music, art, theatres, and fine dining. Philadelphia offers easy access to New York and Washington DC. Additionally, Wissahickon Valley Park, Valley Forge National Park, and many more recreational amenities are within minutes of the city. The University of Pennsylvania is a qualifying employer for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate should possess a veterinary degree (VMD, DVM) and board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Neurology), the European College of Veterinary Neurology (ECVN), or achieve board certification within three years from the start date.

Application Instructions:

Applications will be accepted immediately and reviewed until an appropriate candidate is identified. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
