Job Description Summary / TWC Summary:The Assistant Professor for Department of Music reports to the Music Department Chair, the Dean of The College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences and the Associate Dean and handles supporting and advancing the mission and goals of the university and the college/school in all academic, scholarly and student support activities. The Assistant Professor teaches 21 semester credit hours of assigned courses in the department of Music concentrations per year (12/9), develops curriculum and course content, advises students on course requirements, and takes part in college/school activities for the advancement of organizational goals and student success.Specifically, as the Choir Director, the successful candidate handles leading the choir in rehearsals and performances, selecting music, and teaching vocal techniques. They must have excellent musical skills, knowledge of distinctive styles of singing including jazz, classical and black gospel, and be able to work with a variety of voices. The Choir director is also responsible for preparation and performance of singers to perform at various university wide convocations, recruitment activities, and other events. These responsibilities will be considered in his/her overall workload.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:1) Terminal degree (D.M.A., Ph.D., or equivalent) in music or Music Education or Music Performance. Teaching experience, preferably with undergraduate students.
2) Successful teaching experience of a range of music courses, including musical solo and ensemble performance (classical and other), preferably with undergraduate students. Strong working knowledge of music theory and harmony, music history, and music technology, strong background in music pedagogy, well-developed skills in instrumental or vocal performance skills. Also, the candidate will have an interest in outreach and recruitment and be committed to the greater music education community in Houston and beyond.Expertise in Choir Conducting and one or more of the following areas: as dictated by candidate interest and expertise (voice, piano, general music).Candidate should be qualified to:1) Develop and communicate clear goals and objectives to students2) Plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate specific course content and skills.3) Hold office hours or tutorials as outlined by the university and department4) Schedule applied lessons (if applicable to skillset and teaching load) and provide necessary support to students to meet performance standards and objectives.5) Regularly monitor and evaluate student progress and provide students with resources and feedback on their performance6) Structure and manage an environment conducive to learning and artistic expression.7) Model responsibility to self and others8) Effectively collaborate with colleagues within the department, the college, throughout the university, and beyond9) Follow the school's philosophy, policies, and procedures.10) Participate in departmental, faculty, and all-staff meetings;11) Serve on departmental, faculty, and school-based standing committees.12) Participate in professional development and personal intellectual growth activities; be active in professional organizations.13) Participate in the following activities:a. Assist students on special projects, independent study, and seminar-based studiesb. Take part in recruiting, selecting, and advising prospective studentsc. Take part in TSU alumni activities as neededd. Help with school-sponsored programs and extracurricular activities.18) Study various choral literature and origins, studying the different time periods in connection to the literature and composers.19) Participate in ongoing professional development and research
