Job Summary

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • Oversees student diversity and inclusion efforts to enhance the overall student experience and will work with others to foster an inclusive, welcoming and engaging campus climate on IUPUI's three campuses (Columbus, Indianapolis and Fort Wayne).
  • Promotes student success by directing and having oversight responsibility for DEI's employees and its program of work in the areas of prospective and current undergraduate and graduate student focused outreach, enrichment, transition, retention, academic and psychological support, diversity and inclusion education, campus dialogue, leadership development and mentoring initiatives.
  • Collaborates with academic units and campus departments to gauge, implement, and assess diverse student support and retention efforts.
  • Works to enhance the efforts to diversify curriculum, support faculty and staff diversity, equity and inclusion efforts to improve the classroom and campus climate for diverse students.
  • Maximizes student diversity efforts to identify students, recruit, retain, graduate and move into master's and doctoral programs and/or the workforce by serving as the central point-person, working with each campus office designee charged with fulfilling aspects of this campus-wide mission.
  • Collaborates and plans diversity and inclusion activities in support of increasing the presence of diverse students in pipeline programs, summer and bridge initiatives, undergraduate and graduate study by coordinating retention and support plans with the Directors of K-20 Partnerships in External Relations, Admissions in Admissions and Enrollment Management, Diversity Scholars Research and Olaniyan Scholars Programs; Executive Director of Educational Equity Programs in University College; and Assistant Dean for Student Development and Academic Advisor in the IUPUI Graduate School.
  • Develops and articulates a comprehensive plan for institutional diversity and inclusion that supports a student-centric paradigm and provides leadership and support for those supporting students.
  • Convenes the Student DEI Council to centralize student diversity support and retention efforts across campus for minoritized student populations by sharing best practices, unpacking data, providing tools/strategies and streamlining efforts where possible. Student DEI Council membership includes representatives from academic units, student affairs, etc.
  • Serves on the IUPUI Bias Incident Response Core Team reviewing and addressing bias incident reports.
  • Serves as a consultant to academic units/departments on DEI matters.
  • Works with institutional research to routinely assess and understand students' perceptions of campus climate and use those findings to inform decisions, evaluate university policies, programs and processes related to diverse student persistence and satisfaction.
  • Identities, develops, implements, assesses and evaluates programs and services across the IUPUI campus that promote student development with a particular emphasis on cultural competency, diversity and inclusion.
  • Partnering with appropriate university officials, support faculty efforts to diversity curriculum and manage diversity, equity and inclusion inside the classroom.
General Responsibilities
  • Contributes on senior leadership teams to formulate strategic planning and the highest-level operational objectives for student support areas.
  • Establishes long-term business plans and long-term strategic objectives.
  • Directs leadership staff who provide supervision to student support teams.
  • Responsible for escalated operational issues, including human resources and/or people management situations.
  • Drives innovation, inclusion, and excellence within the area of student support; reviews and creates policies and procedures.
  • Determines overall budget for student support teams; reviews and approves financial proposals from direct reporting leaders; has significant fiscal responsibilities that require frequent interaction with executive leaders.
  • Provides expertise and identifies grant and/or funding opportunities; develops business relationships across the university and externally.
  • Stays up-to-date on new student support standards, technologies, policies, and procedures and works collaboratively with other student support leaders across departments and/or campuses in determining standards, best practices, and related policies/procedures; ensures the adoption and implementation by direct reporting leaders.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field
Preferred
  • Ph.D. in higher education student affairs or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 5 years in student support, higher education student affairs, or related field
  • 3 years of management experience in relevant field
Preferred
  • 10 years of administrative experience relevant to advancing diversity and inclusion in a complex organization preferred.
  • 5 years of student centered program experience preferred.
  • 2 years of directly supervising full-time employees preferred.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
