The Division of Enrollment and Student Success is a partner in the University learning community. It is understood that the educational collective is enhanced both inside and outside of the classroom, through high-impact programs and co-curricular experiences that advance student learning, development, and success. To this end, reporting to the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Success, the Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Student Experience is responsible for creating a stellar, long-lasting experience by aligning all strategic and operational components of student life, student organizations, and student center operations. The AVP will ensure the continuous quality improvement of student life to enhance the student experience at Texas Southern University.

The Assistant Vice President for Student Experience is responsible for student programs that have a direct impact on the student experience, growth and development, persistence to graduation, and overall success. The Assistant Vice President for Student Experience will also work collaboratively with other colleagues to ensure that all first-time, continuing, and non-traditional students engage and experience University life through student involvement and participation in university organizations and promote school spirit at all levels of the university. The AVP provides transformational leadership for student engagement and experiences, responsibility within the community, and strengthens connections to support student success.

Essential Duties Summary:

  • Develops and manages all aspects of the Sterling Student Center and operations. Supervises staff to achieve the goals and objectives of the department and division. Assist students to achieve their academic and co-curricular goals which include mentoring, training, and supervising student leaders and staff. Helps students and families solve problems and respond appropriately to challenges and crises.
  • Develops, coordinates, and assesses comprehensive student experience through activities and programs that are of educational, recreational, social, physical, and intellectual in nature that appeals to the diverse audience of the university student body.
  • Designs and implements student organizational leader and advisor training, including details for student activities policies, procedures, budgetary matters, risk management, and other applicable university policies.
  • Develops, manages, and monitors operational budgets and fiscal reports. Performs periodic fiscal analysis of revenue and expenditures to ensure cost-effectiveness.
  • Use data to assess the effectiveness of academic and support initiatives and develop department and personnel goals that align with the university's mission and goals.
  • Engage in University and community service by service on committees and collaborating with educational institutions and professional organizations for best practices. Participate in recruiting, enrollment, and retention events.
  • Demonstrate and train professionalism and quality customer service in accordance with the University's values. Foster positive working relationships and the ability to make decisions and solve problems. Maintain confidentiality, positive communication, accurate records, and an organized, safe working environment. Exhibit flexibility, willingness to learn, ability to adapt to change, and utilize current technology skills.

Hiring Range:

$97,093.00 - $121,367.00

Education:

A terminal degree in education, leadership, student support, or counseling is required. The degree must be from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Required Licensing/Certification:

Valid Texas Driver's License is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:

  • Familiarity with the sociological issues facing urban, underrepresented, first-generation, and income-needs persons in college and in the community.
  • Knowledge and experience in student services-related technology and experience with student information systems.
Skilled in:
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships and communicate with a diverse array of constituencies.
  • Excellent oral, written, and communication skills.
Ability to:
  • Be adaptable to various competing demands and demonstrate the highest level of service and response.
  • Manage confidential information with the highest discretion.
  • Design, communicate, and implement regulations, codes, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Work Experience:

  • Five to ten years of higher education work experience.

  • Five years of supervisory experience, and evidence of continual professional development in the field of concentration of Human Services, Education, or other closely related fields.

Working/Environmental Conditions:

  • Limited standing and/or walking.
  • Handling lightweight objects.
  • Using or carrying equipment.
  • Stoop, bend or lift.
  • May require routine travel.
