The Fiscal Affairs Team of Stanford University School of Medicine is seeking an Associate Director, Budget and Financial Planning. Reporting to the Assistant Dean and Director of Budget and Financial Planning, this position will have a primary focus in providing leadership and managing strategic financial analysis projects that are impactful to the school's financial sustainability and inform school-wide financial policies. This position will also design and manage financial communications with meaningful narratives that cater to audiences ranging from university leadership, school executives, and general members of the school. The Associate Director will also have a secondary focus of being a key business partner in developing the school's 15-year long range financial forecast in collaboration with team members and members of the school, university, and the hospitals as well as coordinating the school's annual consolidated budget of $2.9 billion. This is an exciting opportunity to make an impact on the financial planning, budget, and analysis for Stanford Medicine.

Duties include:

  • Lead complex, high-visibility strategic financial analysis projects as well as process redesign and innovation projects; develop, implement, and participate in major initiatives. Make recommendations to senior leadership that ensure the school's financial sustainability.
  • Orchestrate annual and one-off financial communications to enhance financial transparency and deliver financial analysis results and implications to university and school senior leadership.
  • Manage the work of other employees in direct supervisory and/or indirect matrix project-based management capacities, make hiring decisions, provide coaching, training and mentoring, manage performance, determine staffing needs, develop and ensure succession planning within area of responsibility.
  • Establish operational objectives and assignments, plan, direct and monitor all budgets for areas of responsibility, manage business operation and administration of the annual budget cycle.
  • Collaborate with team members and members of the school and university in establishing the university budget system.
  • Identify and resolve unique problems of substantial significance that affect the overall functional area, beyond the immediate unit.
  • Manage organization's financial activities and structure; develop system and procedure requirements to support the financial reporting for the organization.
  • Contribute to designing, developing and delivering complex policies and procedures with both short and long term impact.
  • Collaborate with other colleagues on school/ unit projects; design and execute an effective system of internal controls for areas of responsibility; establish operational objectives to support the university's stewardship of resources.
  • Engage in continuous critical analysis of existing systems and processes; identify need for new systems, and develop and present proposals.
  • Represent the units/school within the functional units or school and to external constituencies.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Flexibility to operate across multiple, growing, and rapidly changing team environment.

  • Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects.
  • Skills capable of producing both written and presentation development of financial communications.
  • Experience with budgeting cycles, financial modeling, and operational forecasting.
  • In depth knowledge of University administrative organization, policies, procedures, and practices for institutional research- oriented roles.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
  • Master's degree (MBA, finance or related field) and six years relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Advanced knowledge of Oracle or other business financial systems
  • Advanced understanding of financial principles.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Strong leadership and management skills with previous experience managing people, delegating workload and providing direction/corrections as necessary.
  • Demonstrated competency in project management of a high volume of work, some of which is cyclical.
  • Demonstrated success in performing meticulous, high quality and compliant work.
  • Ability to interpret complex research and fiscal policies, assimilate information from a wide range of resources and act like a mentor and resource to others.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly sitting.
  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry objects weighing 11-20 pounds.
  • Rarely reach/work above shoulder.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Routine extended working hours during peak cycles; travel to school/unit sites across university.


This position is eligible for full-time remote work from any location in the United States and may require periodic visits to campus once travel restrictions are lifted.
