Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Chapman University invites applications for a tenure-track Associate Professor in Journalism position within the Department of English, starting in Fall 2024.  The successful applicant will also be the initial holder of the Franco Pattarino Endowed Professorship of Journalism.

The chosen candidate will have opportunities for multifaceted student engagement, teaching that promotes high-quality journalism, and emphasizes publishing, mentorship, and curriculum development. The program allows students to work across various genres, including civic accountability news, investigative journalism, magazine writing, arts and culture writing, multimedia journalism, digital design, photojournalism, narrative nonfiction, podcasting, sports writing, and broadcast journalism. Future program leadership roles are possible.

Responsibilities

This position requires experience in reporting, writing and/or editing nonpartisan, unbiased  accountability news, features and investigations and a robust research agenda. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work  includes analyzing journalism's role in strengthening democratic and civic institutions. 

  • Teach undergraduate Collegiate News Service reporting and writing courses.
  • Provide guidance and professional development to undergraduate Journalism students by offering personalized academic advising and overseeing their internship experiences.
  • Maintain an active research agenda and publication.
  • Participate in department, college, and university service and community engagement, including cultivating a welcoming campus climate, an inclusive curriculum, and an equitable learning environment.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Terminal degree in Journalism or related field and significant professional journalism experience.
  • Strong potential for an originally-researched book publication or high-impact professional journalism publications. 
  • Evidence of effective teaching in undergraduate courses in Journalism.
  • Professional journalism experience.

Preferred

  • Record of significant professional journalism publications and/or nonfiction book(s) or work under contract.
