This position supports PPM, a division of our medical professional liability line of business specializing in coverage for anesthesiologists, and is based in Overland Park KS.

Job Summary:

The Associate Underwriter performs technical underwriting and policyholder service-related duties, maintains policyholder records, and provides service to policyholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates the renewal process for assigned territory.Keeps the Finance and Underwriting Departments advised of progress.
  • Communicates with policyholders and their representatives in writing, by telephone and fax, electronically, or in person and receives orders for changes in policy information and/or coverage.
  • Maintains policyholder records and files in the computer database for assigned territory.
  • Provides coverage documentation and claim history to authorized parties.
  • Enters information from recertification statements into the computer database as directed by the Underwriters.
  • Maintains current records of accounts receivable balances in assigned territory and works with Underwriting and Finance Departments to identify and resolve reconciliation items.
  • Issues new and renewal policies for approved files and issues endorsements, cancellations, reinstatements, and other documents to policyholders as approved by Underwriting or within guidelines approved by Company management.
  • Corrects errors and makes other adjustments for assigned territory with approval from Underwriting or according to guidelines established by Company management.Delivers documentation to the Accounting Department for monetary adjustments.
  • Prepares coverage proposals, invoices, other reports and exhibits as directed by the Underwriter for assigned territory.
  • Creates application files for assigned territory.File creation includes entering applications for insurance; ordering credit reports, legal checks, and motor vehicle reports (MVRs); issuing binders, certificates of insurance and policies as requested by Underwriting; processing declinations; sending information to peer evaluators and reinsurance company.


Secondary Responsibilities:
  • Performs all front desk responsibilities routinely for breaks and lunch, and periodically for scheduled and unscheduled absences.
  • Processes incoming and outgoing mail periodically for scheduled and unscheduled absences.
  • Participates in special projects, including processing and service improvement activities, as directed by the Vice President of Underwriting or Underwriting Supervisor.


Qualifications:
  • Associate degree with two years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience which must include at least one year of insurance experience.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and interpret instructions, correspondence, and memos.Ability to write reports and correspondence.Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages. Ability to perform manual and computer system rating calculations.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Proficiency in personal computers with emphasis on data base and word processing applications, and ability to type a minimum of forty words per minute.
  • Possess the organizational skills to manage and prioritize a multi-task position. Possess interpersonal skills necessary to successfully interact with Company staff.

Position Salary Range
$21.37 - $35.27
The salary range displayed represents the entirety of the pay grade for this position. Most candidates will start in the bottom half of the range. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have, your location and comparison to other team members already in this role.
