The Diabetes Research Institute has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Scientist. The Assistant Scientist conducts research activities to support the mission of the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) to cure diabetes.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports research activities under the direct supervision of Dr. Midhat Abdulreda
  • Maintains an overview of relevant research findings and ongoing research projects in the Abdulreda lab.
  • Maintains/assists with mouse colonies and genotyping.
  • Contributes to basic and applied research activities and authors scientific publications, technical and agency reports, and patent preparations.
  • Collaborates with senior staff to publish findings in refereed journals. Creates and conducts experiments and analyzes results.
  • Works with other researchers to use and develop end products. Writes extramural proposals with approval from appropriate senior staff.
  • Provides ready access to all experimental data for managing staff. Requests or acquires equipment and supplies for assigned project(s).
  • Uses the Internet, surveys, legal documents, and other available sources to collect information.
  • Applies for grants to continue research and prepares materials for submission to granting agencies and foundations.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.


Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D., M.D. or other doctoral level degree required.

Minimum 1 year of relevant experience

  • Skill in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data.
  • Ability to recognize, analyze, and solve a variety of problems.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in making critical decisions.
  • Previous experience in aseptic cell culture techniques highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in molecular biology required.
  • Previous experience in immunology tools highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in DNA purification/extraction, amplification, gel electrophoresis, and viral transfection highly preferred.
  • Previous experience in mouse handling required.
  • Previous experience in cellular isolation/purification from peripheral blood and immunostaining for flow cytometry required.
  • Previous experience in histological techniques (e.g., immunohistochemistry) and tissue preparation required.
  • Knowledge in computer use and of basic software (e.g., Microsoft Office) required.
  • Knowledge in analytical and statistical software (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Prism, etc.) required.
  • Knowledge in Bio-Plex/Luminex software required.
  • Knowledge in imaging data analysis using Volocity software required.
  • Knowledge in MetaboAnalysis and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) software required.
