Biostatistician
The Department of Epidemiology, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health seeks a Biostatistician to work as part of a data coordinating center study team and collaborate with epidemiologists, statisticians, project coordinators and investigators in a variety of fields to analyze and manage data with the aim of scientific publication. The successful applicant will contribute to the development and application of statistical methods to address research needs in a long-term, nationwide cohort study of HIV-infection and aging.

Applicants must have a Masters Degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or related discipline and research experience is preferred. A strong background in statistical principles and data analysis are required with knowledge of Stata, SAS, S-plus or R (proficiency with multiple statistical programs preferred). Opportunities to present work and coauthor publications in statistical and substantive journals necessitate excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience with manuscript and presentation preparation is desirable.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

The Biostatistician will be responsible for analyzing large, complex data sets from a complex multi-site longitudinal study of HIV. Analysis includes both cross sectional and longitudinal analyses (Kaplan Meier, Cox, Survival Analysis etc.), nested designs, sample selection, and lagged measures. Opportunities to present work and coauthor publications in statistical and substantive journals necessitate excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience with manuscript and presentation preparation is desirable. The individual will be responsible for multiple initiatives and must be self-directed and able to work efficiently.

The primary activities of this position include:

  • Providing statistical design expertise, data management, and data analyses to answer research questions using longitudinal data.
  • Participate as a co-author in preparation of manuscripts and presentations reporting study results.
  • Applicant must be willing to work collaboratively with a diverse team of investigators.
  • Work with investigators to determine the statistical framework for answering the study objective.
  • Drafting statistical analysis plans.
  • Generate analytic data sets including longitudinal data sets.
  • Analyze data to answer scientific questions.
  • Identify potential problems with study data and collaborate with other staff to resolve issues.
  • Documenting data management and analytic policies and principles including the archiving of code for the purposes of reproducibility of research findings.
  • Preparing data tables and figures for publications and presentations at scientific meetings.
  • Contribute to technical/scientific writing and reviewing drafts of reports, posters, and manuscripts, including writing up interpretation of analysis results and description of statistical methods used.
  • Navigating shared files and contributing to shared files to create a transparent research workspace.
  • Attend staff meetings and provide updates on status of projects.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Master's Degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or related quantitative field.
  • One (1) year related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability on significant graduate project or additional doctoral education may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • SAS programming proficiency (mastery preferred).
  • R and STATA programming proficiency desirable.
  • Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) proficiency.
  • Experience performing longitudinal data analysis and survival analysis.
  • Good problem-solving skills, including organizing and investigating possible solutions and presenting them to the team for discussion.
  • Good organizational, written and verbal communication skills in the preparation and presentation of results.
  • Good interpersonal skills in dealing with investigators and a “team-oriented” approach with other staff members and investigators.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
