Position Purpose:

The Business Manager will be responsible for all aspects of municipal wastewater biosolids management for Veolia's Northeast Naugatuck merchant biosolids facility. Responsibilities include Biosolids contract compliance, improving operational efficiencies, assisting in budget preparation of existing merchant operations, marketing of biosolids and developing new opportunities for biosolids management and growth. The Business Manager will report directly to the Municipal Water Northeast Regional Vice President.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Managing and maintaining Biosolids Contract compliance.
  • Developing strategic and holistic business planning for better market understanding and growth of existing and with new business customers.
  • Building internal cohesion of biosolids management and cost control and formulating best management practices and strategies to drive organic growth.
  • Coordinating alternate disposal of Biosolids in the event of any planned or unplanned shutdowns.
  • Building a business intelligence digital platform to implement environmental and financial controls and reporting.
  • Managing larger biosolids OPEX initiatives.
  • Assist in marketing, budget and forecast preparation for our merchant facilities.
  • Internal approval process execution for contract business.
  • Preparing technical reports and proposal documents.
  • Ensuring customer and regulatory satisfaction.
  • Support Corporate business pursuits as available.
  • Maintaining regulatory and policy awareness.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the various regulations, including air, water and waste.
  • Assist the preparation and submission of all relevant operating reports for state regulatory agencies and internal customers under the direction of the Project Manager.
  • Partner with external consultants and contractors to plan system changes and/or additions, under the direction of the Regional VP.
  • Partner with department heads (i.e. engineering, new business, business development, communications, etc.) and Regional VP and Project Manager to ensure capital projects are completed in a timely manner and within budget.
  • Assist the Wastewater Plant Manager to provide support and manage wastewater treatment, construction and related budget items.
  • Maintain effective relationships with community, state, and regulatory as well as acting as are liaison with customer service.

Specific Goals and Objectives:

Develop Biosolids Platform to manage Contract Operations (con-ops) biosolids including:

  • Optimizing con-ops biosolids disposal needs in alignment with existing biosolids merchant disposal operations and external disposal resources.
  • Tracking on-site biosolids processing costs (Trucking & Disposal, polymer, power, etc.) to drive improvement initiatives and benchmarking for COGS control.
  • Managing biosolids operations and logistics.
  • Drive merchant operations performance.

Business Development Support

  • Assist to develop regional biosolids marketing and growth strategies.
  • Assist business development team in finding new biosolids management opportunities.
  • Assist in developing proposals, both indicative and firm that provide customer biosolids management solutions.
  • Manage aspects of merchant operations marketing and sales, client relations, including host clients.
  • Establish capital and operation change initiatives to improve operational efficiency.
  • Develop projects that improve operational efficiencies aligned with corporate goals such as de-carbonization and beneficial reuse.
  • Oversee regulatory aspects of biosolids management including merchant facility.
  • Manage permit and other regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Evaluate regulatory changes and assist in addressing responses.
  • Manage existing biosolids disposal service contracts.

Work Environment:

  • Spends much of the time in a typical office environment.
  • <5% domestic travel expected.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related Science field. MBA preferred.
  • Experience with corporate risk management processes and ability to present to senior management.
  • Experience with managing a business P&L including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective business and operational plans which are financially sound.
  • Ability to develop client relations, deliver proposals and presentations.
  • Understanding of regulatory matters relating to the wastewater and biosolids management.
  • Must be proficient in the use of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (ideally with Google Suite).
  • Demonstrated commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations and adherence to Veolia Values and the company's Code of Business Conduct and other company policies and procedures.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Five (5) years or more of progressive operational and management experience in water and energy operations with a proven track record and demonstrated aptitude with large complex service provider organizations.
  • Wastewater and biosolids projects experience; CT Wastewater Grade 4 License preferred
  • Google Suite application experience
  • Demonstrate effective project planning and organizational skills and effective use of time and resources to accomplish work and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Must be capable of managing conflicting priorities and to demonstrate the ability to work in a team environment with a willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate, timely, effective, complete, and easily understood written communications, reports, and presentations at senior management level.
  • Strong Contract managerial and negotiating skills.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:

  • Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving record to operate company vehicles.
