Job Description

The Cell Design, Performance and/or Process Engineer requires sound technical knowledge related to Lithium Ion materials, chemistry, cell design, and/or cell manufacturing. This role will handle translating business and technical objectives into impactful work deriving novel concepts to optimize BEV/Electric Vehicle Propulsion and support leading new processes and methods. The Cell Design, Performance and/or Process Engineer will work within a highly developed experienced team concentrating on lithium battery materials, cell form factors, manufacturing, and quality on new product solutions for future vehicle electrification customers. Specific work assignments in one or more focus areas will be based on individual's background, development goals and team requirements. Details of the focus areas are in the Responsibilities section. The role is an exciting opportunity to grow and contribute to General Motors next generation Electrification strategy.

Responsibilities:
• Cell Application Design Focus Area
• Responsible for the technical design and development of new cell designs to support EV programs
• Develop advanced cell concepts for GM's new products, develop Cell Most Likely Scenarios (MLS) with Cell Tech Specialists/BOM Family Owner
• Project management of cell design and development utilizing battery cell Process of Engineering (POE) to meet Global Product Development Process (GPDP) deliverables
• Work with Systems Engineering to allocate requirements to cell specifications and testing using Model-Based methods.
• Work with Cell System and Module DREs to ensure interface and packaging compatibility.
• Work with Tech Specialists and Module DRE to translate requirements into specifications.
• Utilize &/or use modeling, simulation and analysis to improve/optimize battery cell design
• Support Cell Peer Reviews, implement lessons learned from other programs, and ensure compliance to Bill of Design (BOD).
• Lead &/or support Cell program specific DFMEA, DRBFM, and DRBTR activities.

• Cell Feature & Performance Focus Area
• Responsible for development and performance of key features of cell design, standardized work and new analysis/characterization technique development
• Lead key feature development (thermal/mechanical features, thermal runaway mitigation, anode, cathode, electrolyte development)
• Lead Advanced Technology Work (ATW) projects advancing cell technology and/or cell analysis/development processes/techniques, thermal runaway mitigation
• Work with appropriate teams [GMRD, Materials, Universities, National Lab, ECS] to improve Cell Engineering Capability; utilize ATW, USABC, SAE, DoE and other funding as required
• Deliver robust solutions which demonstrate DFSS, OPEX, Optimization.
• Work with System Safety to develop safety performance envelope.
• Work with Battery Lab, Research/Development and Materials Engineering to create and improve testing & diagnostics.
• Develop standardized work for battery cell characterization, development, and validation

• Cell Process Engineering Focus Area
• Responsible for cell productionized design, process development, and quality systems from the cell engineering side
• Work with Manufacturing team to build/improve cell manufacturing process.
• Deliver process development and evaluation, contribute to novel LiB cell Bill of Process and Bill of Equipment.
• Lead/support ATW projects on new cell manufacturing processes/equipment
• Work with Supplier Quality to build advanced Manufacturing quality strategy.
• Work with QRD Engineering to create advanced product quality strategy.
• Develop novel LiB cell quality check systems
• Support PFMEA and Quality Control Plan assessments
• Support manufacturing issue root cause and resolution

Additional Job Description

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical, Material Science or Physics.

• Strong project management skills and the ability to be self-directed and team oriented.

• 2+ years of experience in battery cell engineering or battery cell manufacturing/process engineering.

• For Battery Cell Engineering

• Experimental strategies with chemical formulation, emphasis on electrode active materials, electrolyte, and separator.

• Exposure to electrochemical and material level modeling with supporting experiments.

• For Battery Cell Manufacturing/Process Engineering

• Experience developing/improving cell manufacturing processes and quality controls

Desired Skills:

• Master's degree or PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Mechanical Engineering or Physics.

• Electrochemistry background with strong data analysis skills.

• Experience designing lithium ion battery cells or rechargeable energy storage systems.

• Design For Six Sigma and/or Red X Training

• Battery cell process/manufacturing launch experience
