The General Motors Chemicals & Materials Systems Research Lab is seeking to identify highly motivated and qualified individuals for potential future Researcher opportunities. In anticipation of these opportunities becoming available, if you are interested in learning more about GM, completing this profile will allow us to stay connected.

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week

About Chemical & Materials Systems (CMS) Lab

We need motivated researchers to join us in our search for what's next here at GM's Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. Our emphasis is on the systemic integration of chemistry, materials and components. In CMS, we research, innovate, and develop low-cost, high-performance solutions with respect to lightweight propulsion and vehicle subsystems, battery cell materials for electrified vehicles, engine after-treatment systems and other technologies associated with chemical and materials development. We also contribute to the vision of advanced fundamental research collaborating with global research partners and universities. Who You Are
  • Be prepared to lead, plan, and execute research investigations related to low-cost materials processing
  • Write timely and high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention to detail new insights and research results in your area of research
  • Conduct research and/or experiments to collect required data and validate research ideas in developing next-gen battery technology
  • Develop a fundamental understanding of the correlation between microstructure and mechanical and/or chemical behavior
  • Capture findings in internal reports and external publications to disseminate knowledge and drive collaboration with external partners
  • Represent GM by being a leader in lightweight and battery materials while maintaining knowledge and awareness of new developments
  • Idea generation, new project concepts, and demonstrate innovative thinking to solve technical problems
  • Generate and capture novel intellectual property in patents

Additional Job Description

What You Need
  • Advanced Graduate Degree in Science/Engineering subject focus (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, and Materials Sciences and related engineering fields)
  • Demonstrated background in processing-structure-property relationships
  • Ability to analyze and interpret experimental data
  • Ability to work both independently and in cross-functional teams
  • Excellent decision-making skills and problem solving capability
  • Interpersonal traits for effective collaboration with others

What Would Be Better
  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, or Materials Sciences or related engineering subject areas
  • 3+ years industrial experience and/or Postdoc research with related chemicals or materials
