Description
Chief Probation Officer is appointed by the State Probation Administrator with the concurrence of a majority of judges within the judicial district the Chief Probation officer serves. This position entails a wide variety of responsibilities relative to the planning, organizing, coordinating, staffing, directing and supervising of all Probation-related activities within the probation district.

Examples of Work
Essential job functions include: working closely with judges within the probation district and striving to improve Probation practices and services; monitoring, maintaining and establishing relationships within the court system, other criminal justice agencies, and with community representatives; ensuring that all clients are being supervised in accordance with system standards; ensuring staff conduct presentence/predisposition reports in conformance with system standards; exercising authority to arrest and/or detain offenders as necessary; assigning a fair workload to each staff member; informing staff of all rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and allowing for open channels of communication to enhance the operation of the probation district. Selected candidate will perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: A Bachelor's degree in social sciences, criminal justice or related fields and five years of probation or public administrative experience, including at least one year supervising other staff.

PREFERRED: Master's degree in criminal justice or social/behavioral sciences and five years' professional level experience in the broad field of human services involving planning, policy, program administration or program evaluation including two years in a supervisor capacity. All educational credits must be granted from an accredited institution approved by the U.S. Dept. of Education.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge and understanding of all system policies and procedures.

Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of others. Demonstrated ability in a leadership role and record of showing loyalty to his/her supervisors and earning the respect of subordinates.

Ability to communicate effectively with people. Ability to convey Probation principles to the public through speaking engagements and consultation with community groups.
