On a daily basis, the Ultrasound Educator is responsible for directing all activities concerning Ultrasound students. The Educator conducts and coordinates planning and the direction of educational sessions for the students. Assists in the planning and conducts educational programs for the Ultrasound staff. When not otherwise involved in clinical instruction or student evaluation duties, the coordinator functions in the position of a staff sonographer

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

  • Instructs the Ultrasound students within the clinical setting on all aspects of Ultrasound practice.
  • Performs high quality exams, has an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology is able to operate and utilize all types of Ultrasound and related equipment and supplies.
  • Assists with all quality assurance procedures that are necessary for the Department.
  • Conducts and coordinates student room assignments and classes.
  • Evaluates students according to competencies outlined by the Medical Sonography Programs.


  • Acts as a liaison between the Medical Sonography Programs, the Department of Radiology and Hospital Divisions. Addresses any issues that may arise.


  • Responsible for all Clinical documentation that the Medical Sonography Programs require.
  • Assists in the Orientation of new employees and formally and informally instructs technologists and residents.
  • Attends meetings and seminars external to the Department in order to maintain professional expertise.
  • Performs all staff Sonographer duties as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

  • The Educator provides direct supervision of all Sonography students in the clinic setting and will assume floor supervisory responsibilities as needed.

    Qualifications
    QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)

  • Must have graduated from an AMA accredited Ultrasound Program with a minimum of 12 months full time clinical ultrasound experience.

  • 2} Must meet the requirements and successfully complete the ARDMS certification (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers) or equivalent.

    3} Must become registered in all the institution's accredited specialties: first specialty or additional specialty must be completed within one year of start of employment. Second specialty within second year of employment. Additional specialties as required by the accreditation agency.

    2) 2-4 years progressive experience as a sonographer; teaching experience preferred.

    3} Has obtained or is pursuing an educational degree or its' equivalent.

    SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)

  • Comprehensive understanding of computer operations relating to Digital Imaging, the Radiology Information System, Reporting Systems (Ultrstar) and all Hospital Information Systems(Epic) that integrate with the Department of Radiology relating to patient information and management(, Order entry systems, PACS etc.).
  • Must have the analytic ability sufficient to diagnose and correct most complex operating problems, identifying error sources in programs and schedule and plan work of others.
  • Demonstrates a high level of interpersonal skills necessary to lead and work with technologists and students
  • Possesses a high level of teaching skills.
  • Possesses a high degree of technical expertise with an in-depth knowledge of sonographic procedures and equipment.
  • Function effectively in emergency situations, which produce high levels of stress and mental fatigue.
  • Must be aware of hazards within the department (ionizing radiation, standard precautions, etc.), and adhere to safety standards established by BWH and regulatory agencies.


  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.

  • Duties include patient care responsibilities with subsequent exposure to human waste, and similar unpleasant elements.
  • Minimal exposure to ionizing radiation when using proper safety procedures.
  • Continuous standing/walking and lifting.
  • Considerable stress from dealing with a wide variety of hospital staff, patients and families.
  • Works in open area that is noisy and tends to have temperature variations.
