Position Summary:

The Department of Pharmacy, consistent with the mission of Johns Hopkins Medicine, prioritizes teaching, research and patient care. At Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, the department is responsible for providing acute care pharmacy services for a diverse population of medical and surgical patients, with additional services provided in ambulatory clinics. Within the department, there are 14 acute care and primary care clinical pharmacy specialists as well as 3 general pharmacy residents. Working collaboratively with Hopkins physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals, these practitioners are responsible for the provision of clinical pharmacy services across a broad range of patient care areas. Services are provided in the areas of anticoagulation, ambulatory care, cardiology, critical care, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, internal medicine, oncology, pain and palliative care, and pediatrics.

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Decentralized and Clinical Pharmacy Services, the Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Surgery will work collaboratively with our multidisciplinary surgery teams to provide specialized pharmaceutical care, develop and apply medication use policies, and participate in research activities.

The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Surgery will serve as a resource for drug information and education for patients, students, residents, pharmacists, as well as other healthcare professionals. The clinical specialist will serve as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents in our ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency program. Faculty appointments are available through affiliation with the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. Additionally, the clinical specialist will generate and support pharmacy research and scholarly contributions while seeking to assume a leadership role in the profession of pharmacy.

Education/Work Experience:

Work requires the knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts acquired through completion of a Bachelor's or Pharm. D. degree in Pharmacy. One year of experience.

Licensure/Certification:

Current state licensure as a Pharmacist required.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Work requires the analytical skills to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarize the information and data in order to solve problems or design relatively complex systems and programs that cross department/divisional lines.
  • Work requires the ability to exchange information, maintain patient and employee confidentiality, greet visitors, explain medical center policies, and/or relay messages to appropriate personnel. This type of interaction requires courtesy and tact when dealing with patients, visitors and/or medical center employees. More sensitive situations may be referred to others as appropriated.
