Department Information

The Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS), a research institute of Indiana University (IU), seeks applications for a collections technician who will assist with the maintenance of IGWS vehicle fleet, collections facilities, and the acquisition and management of samples in the IGWS collections.

Job Summary

The IGWS seeks an individual with a background in geology and interest in collections management who will prepare geologic materials and samples for analysis and testing, collect new samples in coordination with research geologists, and facilitate the proper archival and management of geologic samples. Responsibilities include coordinating fleet vehicle maintenance with IU Motor Pool and assisting with the maintenance of field and laboratory equipment and collections facilities.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree with background in geology, environmental science, or a related field and two years of experience in working with soil/rock testing and analysis, rock mechanics, earth augering, or preparation of geologic materials for analysis.

Possess a valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University.

Interest and/or experience in working with museum collections, laboratory analytical work, or in field sample collecting applications for water, rock, or unconsolidated sediments. Excellent interpersonal skills and a customer service orientation. Excellent ability to effectively communicate and exchange information. Willingness to work in a team-oriented environment. Ability to demonstrate creativity in identifying complex problems and finding solutions quickly and accurately, attention to detail in communicating technical issues and implementing solutions. Experience and comfort driving trucks with fully-loaded trailers. Possess a mechanical aptitude.

Preferred Qualifications

Skill with repairs of various types of small equipment.
