Job Description Summary
The Communications Coordinator will be responsible for various internal and external communications for the Center and Department of Africana Studies. This will include the drafting of press releases, brochures, and correspondence; drafting communications for the Director; drafting and production of weekly news updates and newsletters; assist in the drafting and production of annual reports; developing, maintaining and updating listservs and social media presence; and developing content, maintaining and updating the Africana Studies website. The Communications Coordinator will also work directly with the Associate Director and Program Coordinator to support, implement and promote Africana Studies Programs.

Job Description

Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania is comprised of two entities—the Department of Africana Studies and the Center for Africana Studies—each with distinct, yet complementary function. The Department oversees undergraduate and graduate teaching, including an undergraduate major and minor and a graduate certificate and doctoral program. The Center provides an array of public programming and research projects. Both the Department and the Center focus on the experiences and history of African American, African, and African-descended peoples as a model for global black studies.

DUTIES:

The Communications Coordinator will work with the Program Coordinator to support, implement, and promote Center for Africana Studies and Department of Africana Studies Programs. The Communications Coordinator will develop event and program publicity, draft press releases, materials, brochures, and correspondence; assist Sr. Staff Director in drafting communications for the Faculty Director. Develop maintain and update social media presence. Maintain and update Africana Studies websites. Draft and produce weekly news updates and newsletters. Assist in drafting and production of annual reports. Maintain Listservs and draft and distribute announcements to the listservs. Complete research in support of programming and communications work. The Communications Coordinator will be expected to staff events outside of their normal working hours.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A High School Diploma/GED and 5 to 7 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. A Bachelor's Degree is strongly preferred. Must possess excellent written and verbal skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and be able to manage time and projects by anticipating needs. Must have strong technical skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office, graphic design, Adobe Suite, and website design. Knowledge of email platforms, social media (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, Instagram, YouTube, blogs, etc.) and experience maintaining web and social media sites preferred. Experience in Higher Education is a plus. Must be available to occasionally staff events outside of normal working hours.

Targeted Pay Range: $20.45- $29 per hour

This Targeted Pay Range is only applicable to this job posting. All salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
