Position Overview

Our paid internship program provides a rich and rewarding hands-on learning experience and the opportunity to make a contribution to our organization. Our interns work in their course of study under close direction of an experienced supervisor/manager. The Communications Intern will assist with general communications throughout our United Companies operations. The ideal candidate will be a second-year student or above studying one of the following subjects: marketing, communications, social media, journalism, public relations, or related.

Wage ranges from $19.00 to $21.00 and hour dependent on experience

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Assist with creating social media content (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.)
  • Gather stories from internal employees throughout the region to be spotlighted on internal newsletters.
  • Assist with the creation of internal newsletters.
  • Assist with marketing the organization internally and externally.
  • Provide general administrative support.
  • Update the United Companies photo database as needed.
  • Complete performance management and an internship project, under the guidance of the Midwest Region Communications Specialist.
  • Gain a general understanding of the business.
  • Help provide support to the Midwest Region Communications Specialist, assisting with special projects as needed.
  • Other tasks as assigned to meet business needs.
  • Regular and timely attendance.
  • Participate in and promote an inclusive work environment.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Required Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled or a recent graduate of a marketing, communications, social media, journalism, public relations or related field of study.
  • Must be a sophomore standing or higher.
  • Understanding of social media platforms and current market trends.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft and Adobe Suites of applications.
  • Detail-oriented, creative, and able to work independently or in a team setting.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous communications and/or marketing experience or coursework.
  • Photo and/or video skills.
  • Knowledge of the concrete and construction industry.

Work Environment
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
