Primary Position Function/Summary:

The Ag Literacy Community Worker will provide and/or coordinate agriculture programs for the schools and communities in Marshall and Putnam Counties. The agriculture programs will be research-based, action oriented and utilize the experimental learning process. The programs will aid in meeting Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards and will link science, math, reading, writing, social studies, health and agriculture together in areas such as the study of animals, energy, insects, plants, soils, weather, genetics, horticulture and conservation of natural resources.

  • Under the programmatic direction of the Unit's Youth Development Educator, guides the Marshall-Putnam Ag in the Classroom and related programs and participant involvement.
  • Represents University of Illinois Extension and serves as a resource for the schools and communities in Marshall-Putnam counties by providing agriculture literacy curriculum, career awareness and enhanced materials, presentations and training opportunities for teachers and students.
  • Programs include in-school and after-school and community programs. Includes development and implementation of virtual live Zoom programs and recorded videos to meet needs of teachers and class rooms during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
  • Completes and submits program budgets, brochures, flyers, media releases, required reports and evaluations. Maintains accurate records for inventory of program materials and supplies. Assists with the grant application and responsible for program implementation.
  • Ongoing communication and coordination with the State: The Center for Ag Engagement Illinois Agriculture in the Classroom, for training, required meetings, curriculum and local program promotions, monthly reporting, meeting ongoing program grant requirements and more.
  • Works with the Unit's 4-H Youth Development staff and Marshall-Putnam Extension staff for program planning and management, and with the Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau for planning and implementation for special programs. Works with the local advisory board for promotion of programs and securing local funding.
  • Attends Unit staff meetings, participates in professional development activities and performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
One year of experience (paid or unpaid) in work related to the job to be performed

These Community Outreach Worker positions are 80%-time, benefits-eligible Civil Service positions. The work schedule is to be determined (37.5 hours per week, 12 months per year). The minimum salary is $13.38 per hour.
