Overview

i3 is seeking an experienced Controls and Instrumentation Engineer to join our team for a once in a lifetime opportunity to lead the development of a unique, cutting-edge ground test facility. The Controls and Instrumentation Engineer activities may be conducted in Huntsville, AL, Tullahoma, TN, or any remote location with occasional travel to Tullahoma, TN and/or Huntsville, AL. Project Phoenix's mission is to construct the first of its kind Hypersonic Wind Tunnel Test Facility and represents a multi-million-dollar project involving the development, fabrication, system integration, implementation, and check out of a large-scale wind tunnel test facility to support hypersonic system technology maturation.

Salary Range: $130k - $230k

The salary range for this position is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, geographic location, and any applicable laws.
Responsibilities

  • The Controls and Instrumentation Engineer will assess, design, develop, integrate, and test system instrumentation and control system components.
  • Controls and Instrumentation design for operation and maintenance activities considering facility, system and subsystem requirements, facility safety, facility longevity and personnel safety.
  • Coordinate with engineers of other disciplines and provide controls and instrumentation related input into system design documentation (e.g., Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, System Safety Hazard Analysis, etc.).
  • Development of controls and instrumentation documentation such as requirement definition, logic and flow diagrams, interface definition, software design documents, instrumentation, and device I/O documentation, etc.
  • Development of controls and instrumentation code such as signal conditioning, engineering unit conversion, human machine interface design, permissive/interlock design, alarm design, automated function design, group function design, unique equation/algorithms, action sequencing, etc.
  • Oversee and/or participate in hardware calibration, installation, and commissioning.
  • Support procurement activities such as specification development, cost estimating, quote review, question and answer sessions, vendor documentation review, site acceptance review, etc.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% of the time to Tullahoma, TN, Huntsville, AL, or other vendor locations as required.
Qualifications

Required Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in engineering or another STEM field.
  • Minimum ten years of experience in design and analysis of controls and instrumentation systems in support of ground test facilities and/or flight systems development.
  • Minimum two years of experience in the design, installation, or operations of control systems associated with high temperature and/or high-pressure process flow operations.
  • Minimum two years of experience in the design, installation, or operation of high temperature and/or high-pressure measurement and/or data acquisition systems.
  • Experience utilizing engineering design codes and standards such as the National Electric Code (NEC), etc.
  • Current U.S. Secret Security clearance or the ability to obtain/maintain a Secret clearance.
  • Knowledge of LabVIEW and Microsoft SQL Server
  • Knowledge of GE CIMPLICITY or other HMI/SCADA solution

Desired Experience:
  • Experience supporting flight or ground testing events for high-speed systems
  • Experience developing control and instrumentation systems specific to high-speed ground for flight test systems
  • Experience in operational system safety processes for complex flight test or ground test systems.
