About the Department:

Perkins School of Theology is one of the 13 seminaries of The United Methodist Church and one of only five university-related United Methodist theological schools, located in the heart of Dallas, Texas, with an extension program in Houston/Galveston. The faculty and staff of Perkins are committed to our mission of equipping persons for faithful leadership and Christian ministry in a changing church and society. Students study with a faculty, diverse both culturally and in theological perspective, in the School's graduate degree and certificate studies programs. Perkins is Wesleyan by tradition, United Methodist by affiliation, inclusive of diverse Christian expressions, and welcoming of all. The oldest graduate professional School at Southern Methodist University, Perkins embraces its setting in the Southwestern United States while seeking to make theological education accessible, through in-person, hybrid, and distance learning, to students from the region, the nation, and around the world.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Coordinator of External Programs and Church Relations, will serve as a coordinator for programs and grant initiatives under the direction of the Assistant Dean of External Programs and Church Relations at Perkins School of Theology, including assistance with initiatives such as the Center for Preaching Excellence, Testimony as Community Engagement, Reboot, and others. This leader is expected to interface with church and non-profit leaders and organizations--nationally, regionally, and locally--on a regular basis, in addition to directing focused communication and management for programming and strategic partnership efforts. The position will run out of the Office of External Programs, while working with multiple program directors.

Essential Functions:

  • Perkins Church Relations: Coordinate strategic communication for church and institutional relationships. Direct targeted communications (email campaigns) with limited audiences and constituents. Make new connections with viable partners.
  • The Center for Preaching Excellence: Serve as the primary contact for engagement and recruiting efforts. Coordinate communication for strategic church relationships. Direct targeted communications with limited audiences and constituents. Create and manage tasks associated with director calendars, event and program management, catering, facility reservations, publicity, and program registrations.
  • Grant, Endowment, and Congregational Initiatives: Serve as the administrative assistant for a variety of rotating Perkins initiatives interfacing with local congregations; programs such as (but not limited to): Testimony HQ, Reboot, Church Leadership Development, Lay Education, Evangelism and Church Growth, etc.
  • Assist with OEP Event Services: Be a part of the OEP team when delivering an event or program, assist with deployment in-person and online, as needed, for quality assurance and continuation.
  • Occasional evening/weekend hours may be required.
  • Occasional travel may be required.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A High school diploma or equivalent is required. A Bachelor's degree is preferred.

A minimum of three (3) years of experience is required. Experience working in church leadership is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also demonstrate strong written communication skills.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills.

Candidate must be able to demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
