Coordinator or Assistant Director of Career Services

College of Media

The Coordinator/Assistant Director of Career Services will assist undergraduate students in the College of Media with all aspects of career development as well as the internship and job search process. This position will collaborate with campus partners, alumni, industry professionals, and department faculty and be an overall resource for current and prospective College of Media students.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

50% Assist undergraduate students with career development

  • Advise students regarding career exploration and post-graduation options.
  • Work closely with designated departmental faculty, College of Media staff and the campus career services community to create and maintain career related programs, events, and networking opportunities.
  • Serve as Media representative and actively engage with Career Services Council.
  • Train and supervise graduate assistant who will assist with resume and cover letter reviews.
  • Develop programming and workshops in conjunction with departmental faculty liaisons to guide students through the internship and job search processes.
  • Create and update online and print resources to assist job seekers with their job search process.
  • Organize and plan events to connect current students with College of Media faculty and alumni.
  • Manage the Media Career Services presence on Handshake.
  • Compile statistics, administer surveys, write reports, and provide data to the College of Media and other audiences, as necessary.
  • (Assistant Director) Maintain calendar of related internship deadlines and applications.
  • (Assistant Director) Oversee Illini Success data collections from recent graduates.

25% Coordinate New Voices internship program
  • Oversee the creations of the New Voices program, providing yearlong internship experiences for select freshmen and sophomores within the College of Media.
  • Promote internship program to incoming students.
  • Work closely with the Director of Communications to create projects for the interns.
  • Gather interns biweekly to provide training and career development workshops.
  • Utilize College of Media faculty and professionals across campus to provide direction and training to students.
  • Meet with students individually or in small groups to provide project guidance.
  • Create assessment plan for New Voices and provide an annual report on the program.
  • (Assistant Director) Communicate with other related programs on campus for best practices and benchmarking.

25% Participate in recruiting events and programming for prospective College of Media students
  • Present to prospective students and families about careers in media.
  • Meet with prospective students and families.
  • Represent the College of Media at college and university recruiting events, as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with appropriate Student Services Center staff to provide input on recruitment strategy and prospective student materials.
  • Develop and/or plan recruiting events for prospective and admitted students.
  • Utilize Illini Success data to provide first destination information to prospective students.

Required Qualifications (Coordinator):
  • Bachelor's degree in media, communication, public relations, student affairs, higher education, counseling, human resources, or related field.
  • Significant intercultural skills and experience with diverse populations.
  • 1-2 years of work experience in media, communications, public relations, student affairs, higher education, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in effective collaboration and communication with students, faculty, staff, and external constituents.

Required Qualifications (Assistant Director):
  • Master's degree in media, communication, public relations, student affairs, higher education, counseling, human resources, or related field.
  • Significant intercultural skills and experience with diverse populations.
  • 3 or more years of work experience in media, communications, public relations, student affairs, higher education, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience in effective collaboration and communication with students, faculty, staff, and external constituents.

Preferred Qualifications (Coordinator and Assistant Director):
  • Relevant work experience in communications, public relations, or media-related field, or experience in advising/counseling related to career development or corporate recruitment.
  • An understanding of the needs and concerns of college students and a passion for working with them.
  • Experience supervising graduate students, undergraduate students, or professional staff.
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.
