IU Studios is the central Marketing and Communications unit at Indiana University and includes the University Events and Conferences teams. Our insights and technology-driven teams serve as strategic consultants throughout the university, with a central mission to create experiences that lead to a lifelong love for IU.

The visuals team produces high-quality content for IU social channels, promotional materials, marketing campaigns, broadcast TV, university events, and more.

Job Summary

IU Studios is seeking a Creative Leader to provide operational and creative direction for our staff of photographers and videographers. Creative Leaders are responsible for the creative operations of the brand and visual teams within IU Studios. This new leadership position and the team they oversee are primarily responsible for capturing and producing video and photography that forwards the strategic objectives of IU Studios, the internal marketing and communications teams at Indiana University.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Supervises and manages the visuals team (photographers and videographers); provides creative leadership, mentorship, planning, operations, scoping, pre-production, and resource allocation.
  • Coordinates team activities for both video and photography projects, from concept development to post-production and delivery.
  • Develops and manages a consistent, efficient project intake process
  • Strategizes with marketing leadership to build scope, estimate and master production plans
  • Manages master schedule for photo and video production and oversees pre-production planning and onsite production activities for our partners.
  • Manages relationships with partners and vendors, and builds a robust network of available freelance resources that can be called upon when internal resources aren't available.
  • Identifies, documents, and scales best practices for photography and videography and evolves organizational processes as necessary, with emphasis on collaboration, efficiency, and delivering high-quality products on time and within budget/resource constraints.
  • Manages the digital asset library, ensuring that all content is relevant, current, searchable and serves the broader marketing and communications audience at the university.
  • Builds partnerships across the organization and identifies content gaps and opportunities to build the library.
  • Although this is a leadership position within the team, the job duties also include contributing to projects in a functional capacity. The Creative Leader, Visuals balances coaching, mentorship, and supervisory duties with self-assigned project tasks.
General Responsibilities
  • Directs day-to-day operations for the marketing and communications function by providing oversight and direction within a department or large multi-faceted department.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, coaches, assigns work, and supervises the work of a team of Marketing Generalists and/or Marketing Assistants.
  • Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders; determines marketing needs, projects, and programs to align with objectives and goals and supervises processes such as the development of marketing timelines related to such initiatives.
  • Independently develops, evaluates, and executes basic and complex strategic marketing plans for a department, functional area within a department, or large, multi-faceted department to advance goals and objectives, including data collection and market research, target market definition, development of project timelines, sourcing of promotional materials, and marketing content creation.
  • Responds to escalated and complex inquiries and requests from direct reports and stakeholders; acts as a resource and explains policies, procedures, and programs.
  • May assist in budget planning and administration for marketing initiatives, including expenditures, revenue projections, and project and program costs.
  • Regularly researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty; monitors industry trends and best practices and makes process and operational and strategic recommendations to manager.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, English, public relations, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in relevant field
Preferred
  • 5 years of relevant experience in a video or photo production environment.
  • Experience managing people.
  • Experience with a production budget and identifying hard costs and planning budgets for production at scale.
Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
