Job Summary

Indiana University East is accepting applications for a Custodian in the physical plant. The Custodian performs a variety of tasks in support of campus physical plant services and functions. This work involves adhering to established standard procedures, techniques, and safety requirements with some judgment required to interpret instructions. Keeps buildings and facilities in clean and orderly condition. Performs heavy cleaning duties, such as cleaning doors, shampooing rugs, washing walls and glass, and removing refuse. Performs routine light maintenance activities. Notices management in a timely manner of items in need of repair or replacement.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

• Cleans building floors, ramps, and stairs by sweeping, wet mopping/dust mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming. Steam-cleans or shampoos carpets and strips, seals, finish, and polishes floors.
• Services, cleans, and supplies restrooms. Collects recyclables and gathers and empties trash.
• Cleans and polishes furniture and fixtures. Moves and relocates furniture. Replaces light bulbs. Cleans windows, glass partitions, and mirrors using soapy water or other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees. Dusts furniture, walls, machines, and equipment. Cleans, replaces, and hangs blinds, drapes, and entrance mats.
• Locks, unlocks, and secures buildings and maintains awareness of buildings and facilities. Reports abnormalities or security concerns.
• Mixes water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
• Shovels snow.
• Identifies and reports needed building repairs in a timely manner. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

General knowledge at the high school level.

Knowledge of cleaning procedures and equipment and the ability to operate and use standard cleaning equipment and materials. Ability to follow safe work practices in biohazard and/or hazardous waste clean-up (i.e., bloodborne pathogens; toxic, reactive, explosive and ignitable laboratory wastes, corrosive wastes from cleaning operations; other miscellaneous wastes from across campus). May involve training and tests in hazardous waste management. Ability to interact and communicate with a wide variety of people. Ability to perform work that requires medium to heavy physical effort. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to work in a team environment and perform work in a safe and efficient manner.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous custodial experience.

Advertised Salary

$12.54 per hour. Annual salary of $26,083.20.

Work Hours

Monday - Thursday from 2:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. with a one hour lunch break and Friday 12:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. with a one hour lunch break.
