GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Under direction of the Manager of Cyclotron Operations, supports operation of the MGH PET Cyclotron for the safe and reliable production of radioactive isotopes used to synthesize of PET radiopharmaceuticals for clinical and research use. The incumbent participates in the day-to-day operation of the cyclotron as well as scheduled and unscheduled maintenance periods. In addition, they will support ongoing research activities in the cyclotron facility.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operate the cyclotron for production of PET radioisotopes for clinical and research use.
  • Ability to work early morning shifts (starting at 3am) on routine basis and occasional evening shifts (ending at midnight) as well as weekends.
  • Perform routine maintenance on cyclotron and associated equipment.
  • Document and troubleshoot cyclotron problems.
  • Maintain the cyclotron area and the associated laboratory space.
  • Participate in the design of prototype research equipment.
  • Assists nuclear pharmacists and radiochemists in the production of PET radiopharmaceuticals:
    • Cleaning of automated radiochemistry synthesis units
    • Maintenance of automated radiochemistry synthesis units
    • Operation of automated radiochemistry synthesis units
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to work in a radiation area including handling and dispensing radioactive isotopes.
  • Basic knowledge and experience using mechanical tools.
  • Basic knowledge and experience using electrical/electronics tools and test equipment.
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Willingness to learn and adhere to established operational procedures.
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry 60 lbs.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and to work under high pressure situations.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills are required in order to diagnose and repair the complex equipment in a safe manner.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering (Mechanical or Electrical) or Physics is preferred.
  • Minimum education: High School Diploma

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum 3 years experience in particle accelerator operations is preferred.
  • Experience in handling radioactive materials is desired.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Laboratory setting
