Southern Utah University is conducting a national search for the Dean of The College of Performing and Visual Arts. Demonstrated history and profound connection to the arts is imperative, as the ideal candidate for the Dean of The College of Performing and Visual Arts at Southern Utah University should bring a passion for artistic endeavors, fostering a deep understanding and appreciation for the creative disciplines within an academic setting. Desired competencies include successful leadership experience in managing an academic unit with strength in budgeting and finance, curriculum review and implementation, fundraising, and the ability to build strong and productive relationships both internally and externally.

As noted in its mission statement, Southern Utah University is a dynamic teaching and learning community that engages students in experiential education leading to personal growth, civic responsibility, and professional excellence. As such, highly engaged faculty teach and mentor students. Faculty bring significant educational and experiential backgrounds to the classroom, are engaged in professional organizations, and are active scholars in their respective fields.

The University:

Southern Utah University (SUU) is located in Cedar City, Utah, and is a public four-year master's granting teaching institution. Over 15,000 students pursue an undergraduate or graduate education at SUU. Cedar City has approximately 35,000 residents and is located in the heart of spectacular beauty, surrounded by national parks, monuments, forests, and wilderness areas that draw millions of visitors annually from around the world. Residents of the area enjoy an abundance of sunshine, clean air, and year-round outdoor activities such as mountain biking, hiking, camping, golfing, skiing, and snowboarding, etc. Cedar City is steeped in a rich history and active participation in the arts including the Tony award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival and the Southern Utah Museum of Art on the SUU campus.

The College/School:

The SUU College of Performing and Visual Arts serves as a catalyst for students to realize their creative potential by providing a personalized and rigorous learning environment, fostering experiential education and contributing to the cultural enrichment of a global society.

The College includes the Department of Filmmaking, Art and Design, the Department of Music, and the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Arts Administration. The College of Performing and Visual Arts (CPVA) comprises 41 academic programs including liberal arts (BA/BS) and professional (BFA, BM, BMEd) degrees in the departments of Filmmaking, Art, & Design, Music, and Theatre, Dance, & Arts Administration as well as the Southern Utah Museum of Art. In addition, The College offers graduate programs in the fields of Arts Administration, Music Education, and Music Technology, and unique minors in Shakespeare Studies and Museum Studies. More than 60 full-time faculty and staff are engaged in teaching and mentoring over 900 majors in the College. SUU is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD), and the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), and the National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST), making SUU the first public university in the state of Utah to be accredited by all four associations. CPVA presents over 100 performances, lectures, presentations, and exhibitions each year, and the curriculum and efforts of the highly qualified faculty and staff are further enhanced by affiliation with the Tony award-winning Utah Shakespeare Festival.

The Position:

An Academic Dean at Southern Utah University is responsible for all programs related to the College/School, including academic, scholarly/creative, student activities, and credit-bearing continuing education curricula.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Reports to the Provost and plays a key leadership role in the administration of the Division of Academic Affairs and the University;
  2. Serves as a member of the Deans' Council to promote the values and priorities of the Division of Academic Affairs and the University;
  3. Works collaboratively within the Division of Academic Affairs and across the
  4. University to support institutional goals related to student enrollment, retention, and graduation;
  5. Provides effective, collaborative, and transparent leadership for the College as a whole;
  6. Supports the development of a shared strategic vision of the College;
  7. Establishes a collegial, inclusive culture of shared governance;
  8. Ensures operational effectiveness in all functions of the College;
  9. Represents and advocates for the faculty, staff, and students of the College;
  10. Supports and promotes high-quality academic programs;
  11. Prepares and oversees the College's budget;
  12. Supports the functioning of the College's various facilities, equipment, property, and other critical resources;
  13. Works in collaboration with the Office of Advancement to cultivate the procurement of additional financial resources by supporting grant writing and fundraising efforts;
  14. Provides leadership characterized by transparency and professional integrity that inspires cooperation, innovation, creativity, and respect among faculty, students, administrators, and staff;
  15. Cultivates a collegial, collaborative, and inclusive environment with faculty, students, staff, administrators, and the community;
  16. Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, on all issues and processes related to the College with a variety of stakeholder groups;
  17. Supports key initiatives for the College and facilitates communication about the College's efforts and accomplishments;
  18. Fosters a culture of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service while promoting a highly productive and collegial work environment;
  19. Works to preclude and facilitate resolution of conflicts of all types across the College;
  20. Recruits and mentors qualified faculty and staff, and ensures evaluation standards and processes reflect the values and priorities of the College;
  21. Oversees the resources, facilities, equipment, and initiatives that support a dynamic and meaningful educational experience for students;
  22. Ensures that faculty, staff, and students have the resources needed to support high-quality academic programs;
  23. Works with academic departments to develop and implement strategic goals, objectives, and action plans;
  24. Works with departments to review existing academic programs and develop new academic programs in response to emerging disciplinary trends, demonstrated student interest, demands of graduate school admission, and evolving needs of employers;
  25. Works with departments to ensure academic programs establish a discipline-appropriate system of assessment of student learning that leads to continuous improvement;
  26. Works with departments to seek and maintain specialized accreditation for academic programs in the College;
  27. Works with departments to promote and support interdisciplinary programming and collaboration within the College and across the Division of Academic Affairs;
  28. Participates in community outreach and represents the College and University in national, regional, and state organizations;
  29. Performs other duties as assigned by the Provost.


Education and Experience Requirements:

Required Qualifications:
  1. An earned doctorate or terminal degree in a discipline within the College, is eligible for tenure in a discipline within the College, and a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching, scholarly/creative accomplishment, and professional activity.
  2. Superb interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
  3. Proven experience in fundraising to support strategic initiatives.
  4. A minimum of five-years full-time teaching in higher education and three to five years of higher education academic leadership experience, preferably at the level of department chair or equivalent applied leadership experience.
  5. An appreciation of shared governance and evidence of commitment to integrating input from faculty, staff, students, and other stakeholders in the decision-making process, a collaborative working style, and the ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies.
  6. Fiscal management experience.
  7. Working knowledge and application of current technologies.
  8. Evidence of commitment to community outreach with organizations and stakeholders.
  9. Working knowledge of standards, policies, and procedures for accreditation.
  10. Proven experience and understanding of the applied nature of the disciplines within the College and willingness to support a variety of engaged, creative, and experiential learning opportunities.

  1. Commitment to advancing opportunities within the performing and visual arts, ensuring an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, faculty, and staff.
  2. Familiarity with and appreciation for integrating technology into the arts education landscape, keeping the College at the forefront of contemporary educational practices.
