GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.

The Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry in the Department of Surgery provides oral medicine and dental services for medically complex patients. The Division of Oral Medicine and Dentistry currently provides ambulatory services at: Brigham and Women's Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and Children's Hospital of Boston. In addition to providing excellent clinical care, the Division is also a leader in education and runs an extensive research portfolio.

The Oral Examiner is responsible for performing oral assessments on clinical research subjects in accordance with the individual study objectives. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (Division faculty member).

Works independently, following established hospital and department guidelines.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.

  • Provide oral measurement examinations for research study patients under the general direction of the principal investigator.
  • Record findings and measurements in medical record according to study parameters.
  • Provide information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests related to the research study.
  • Actively participate in calls and meetings related to study.
  • Communicate regularly with study team members, internal and external.
  • Stay abreast of study-related details and requirements.
  • Troubleshoots and resolves problems.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)

  • Licensed Dental Hygienist.
  • Experience in clinical research, preferred.


  • SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)

  • Must be familiar with periodontal measurements, and DMFS scoring.
  • Must be able and willing to comply with procedures, rules, and regulations of clinical research.
  • Must be well organized, able to work independently, and able to manage stressful situations.
  • Must possess interpersonal skills to interact courteously and communicate effectively with co-workers, faculty, students, and other hospital personnel.
  • Must have ability to make logical decisions, based on sound judgment and experience.
  • Must have understanding of computer technology and its applications in a clinical setting, including medical records, billing systems, and supportive clinical equipment.


  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.

  • Clinic environment.
  • Exposure to odors, infectious material and other hazardous materials.
  • Intermittent standing and occasional lifting of supplies is required.

    Qualifications
