General Description of the Job Class

Independently examines, diagnoses, and treats commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems on the patient population of the Duke Health System.

Duties and Responsibilities of this Level

Provides comprehensive dental care to medically compromised patients within the framework of the Duke Health System. Diagnoses alocclusions, and pathological or irregular conditions and ensures proper referral of patients for evaluation or specialty care.

Serve as the primary referral contact for dental consultations of the in-patient population of Duke University Hospital.

Participation on specific patient treatment evaluation boards (Head & Neck Tumor Board; Organ Transplant Board, etc.) is expected as it relates to potential dental clearance of these patients to undergo surgical therapy.

Provides oversight/supervision of dental hygienists employed by Duke Oral Health.

Communicates effectively with patients and families with multiple dental and health problems and of different ethnic/societal backgrounds.

Ensures appropriate medical records are maintained and updated in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education

Degree in dental surgery (D.D.S.) or dental medicine (D.M.D.) from a school approved by the Council on Dental Education, American Dental Association (ADA); or other dental school, provided the education and knowledge acquired was substantially equivalent to that of graduates from an ADA-approved school.

Experience

Two years of professional dentistry experience and/or training; and/or superior academic performance.

Experience and/or Training must be one of the following types: - Post-licensure professional experience in the general practice of dentistry, with a preferred focus in the care of the medically compromised patient. - Approved internship training - Approved residency training program in Hospital Dentistry is preferred. - Graduate-level study in an accredited dental school - Post-licensure professional experience in a specialized area of practice, with a focus in Hospital Dentistry preferred - Other advanced study of training (outside a dental school or hospital) creditable towards satisfaction of training program requirements for Board eligibility.

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
