About the Department:

The Department of English has more than 50 full-time faculty, including nineteen tenured and tenure-track faculty in literature and creative writing, and thirty lecturers and senior lecturers in literature and the first-year writing program, as well as three full-time administrative staff. The department offers undergraduate majors in English and American literature, along with a specialization in creative writing. Its Ph.D. program is generously funded through an endowment from the Duwain E. Hughes, Jr., family, and this endowment also supports the department's plans to advance in rankings of English Ph.D. programs and to support SMU's Road to R1 plan.

About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position.

The Director for Programming will assist faculty in developing and coordinating high-profile events such as conference hosting, symposia, and colloquia on matters relating to literary study and adjacent fields, along with assisting faculty in the creation of proposals, detailed budgets, and publicity for such events. The holder of this position will also assist faculty in writing of external grant proposals, promoting the department's degree programs, and coordinating with faculty and program directors to align department course offerings with conferences and other events. Such functions will aid the department in harnessing its resources to raise the professional profile of its faculty and its degree programs, especially the PhD.

Essential Functions:

  • Oversees and coordinates events and special projects: Event and program planning, including but not limited to, procurement of catering, venue, travel, lodging, transportation, guest relations for departmental and college events; program brochure updates; coordinating with faculty and directors of undergraduate and graduate studies to align events with course offerings; as well as other duties and projects.
  • Provides faculty support including but not limited to assisting with grant applications, budgeting for conferences, speakers, colloquia, and symposia; planning conferences and other programs; publicity for conferences and speakers; coordinates mailings, mailing list maintenance; updates event calendars; produces correspondence; assists with vendor management; coordinates and tracks event attendance.
  • Website design, management & maintenance for department.
  • Publishing: Designing, editing, drafting, and publishing departmental newsletters; designing and distributing posters, programs, and mailers for events.
  • Accept responses and orders via mail, email, on-line, and phone. Database creation and management. Other duties as assigned.

  • Attend professional conferences in the field.
  • Evening/Weekend hours are required.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A master's degree in Humanities is required, English is preferred. A PhD is preferred.

A minimum of seven years of experience is required. Programming management and web design and maintenance experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must demonstrate strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies.

Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong planning, organizational, and time management skills with a high level of initiative and judgement. A strong customer service orientation is essential.

Candidate must be able to simultaneously manage multiple tasks and have a superior attention to detail.

Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher), Adobe Acrobat, Canvas and web design software. Familiarity with Sitecore, PeopleSoft and Box is a plus.

Event planning certification is desirable.
