Job Description
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Facilities Management and Planning, the Director of Environmental Health & Safety is responsible for the leadership, administration, management, and supervisory oversight of services and functions of the Environmental Health & Safety Office. The Office provides a comprehensive environmental health and safety program for the College and will guide associated programs, activities, and services in a safe, compliant and effective manner for our students, faculty, and staff.

The Director is responsible for technical guidance, training, inspections, and risk analysis for College programs, activities, and services to ensure compliance with applicable environmental, safety and health regulations. The Director serves as the primary liaison with Federal, State, and local agencies having jurisdiction (i.e., Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), etc.). The Director also participates with other senior managers to develop, establish, and implement strategic and operational plans and initiatives.

Wellesley College comprises 450 acres, ~70 buildings, and more than three million gross square feet whose programs and services are used by 2,300 students, ~ 2000 faculty and staff as well as by the general public and visitors. The Environmental Health & Safety Office, has three full time employees, 3 part time employees and consultants. The Office works closely with colleagues across the campus, by providing information, training and the tools needed to maintain compliance with governing regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct all applicable EH&S programs in order to ensure compliance with EH&S regulations and industry standards including but not limited to US EPA, US OSHA, Fire Department, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), and Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA).
  • Provides EHS specific training to the college community through classroom/on-line training. Will also coordinate with outside training partners.
  • Acquire and maintain permits and other regulatory documentation for the College. This includes the preparation and submission of regulatory documentation
  • Oversight of laboratory safety programs in accordance with the Lab Management Program and other applicable programs. Serves on various laboratory safety committees. Serves as Biological Safety Officer on campus to provide support, expertise, and technical knowledge on biological safety.
  • Serves as a member of various campus wide safety committees including Emergency Management and COOP for Facilities.
  • Supervises the hazardous chemical, universal, and biological waste collection and disposal program on campus
  • Develops and maintains a measurement system to track EH&S performance metrics (number of safety incidents, accidents etc.). Compiles, reviews, analyzes and interprets data and communicates with stakeholders using clear, concise reporting mechanisms to achieve EH&S improvement and compliance
  • Oversees compliance, in collaboration with other units within Facilities, with the campus use of drinking water through the Mass DEP's Water Management Act
  • Oversees and manages required facility inspections, program audits, and other environmental health and safety-related inspections by regulatory agencies having jurisdiction (i.e., OSHA, EPA, State Fire Marshal, Mass DEP, Wellesley Health Department, etc.,)
  • Directly responsible for the development and implementation of the Office's mission, goals, objectives, and initiatives in a manner dovetailed with the Department's and College's overall direction
  • Directly responsible for personnel management and administration including hiring, retention, performance, corrective and/or disciplinary action, and resolution of issues
  • Directly responsible for the management of assigned budgets and resources to ensure accurate monitoring, tracking, analysis, and forecasting conducted to ensure successful performance
  • Serves as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies having jurisdiction as related to environmental health and safety requirements
  • Assists with efforts to respond to campus emergencies as related to the assigned area of responsibility including active participation in emergency management teams and serving in key positions of leadership within the campus emergency management structure
  • Maintain a current and comprehensive knowledge of regulatory and EHS standards, best practices and requirements; identify; new and emerging regulatory requirements. Keep College leadership apprised of regulatory issues and risks.
  • Collaborate with internal parties and College leadership across campus and serves as the subject matter expert on EHS matters for the institution. This position provides consultative assistance and technical guidance to senior management and administrators on department strategies and objectives and briefs administrators on critical and sensitive issues.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Thorough and detailed knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental health and safety regulations governing an institutional environment within the State of Massachusetts and ability to provide insight, guidance, advice, and leadership necessary to ensure safety of the campus and its students, faculty, and staff
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a strong customer service approach
  • Demonstrated knowledge of personnel management including interacting effectively with many levels of personnel, providing sound analysis and guidance to supervisory staff, performance management, dispute resolution, and team development
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical documents or regulations and then determine applicability and steps associated with achieving compliance
  • Ability to effectively organize and present information, data, ideas and concepts in written or presentation format
  • Ability to foster teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere while establishing effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an area related to environmental science/health, environmental, safety, chemistry, biology - preferably in an academic or research setting
  • Detailed knowledge of environmental engineering principles, occupational health and safety sciences, and/or chemical process safety (e.g. chemistry, physics, toxicology, industrial hygiene, environmental permitting, environmental remediation, etc.);
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated effective experience working within applicable federal, state and local safety laws and regulations, including awareness of current issues that may impact functional responsibilities;
  • Experience developing effective working relationships with governmental/regulatory agencies and demonstrated ability to partner with internal administrators to implement effective hazard mitigation programs;
  • Demonstrated independent judgment, collaborative leadership, and strong problem-solving abilities and the ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts; and
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a broad variety of individuals and groups across organizational lines.
  • Ten plus years of experience
  • Comfort working with various software programs
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Environmental Health & Safety or a directly related field
  • Designation as a Board-certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Experience in the management of a broad spectrum of environmental health and safety programs typical of a college or university, or other large-scale, multi-facility complex organization
