Higher Education Resource Services (HERS) is a dynamic and independent non-profit dedicated to advancing gender equity in higher education leadership. Position Summary

Reporting to the president and serving as an integral member of the senior management team, the Director of Finance will be responsible for overseeing financial and business operations at HERS, including cash management, financial policies and procedures, budget development, business/operational project management, and related strategic initiatives. The Director of Finance will serve as an active and engaged member of the senior leadership team and will contribute to the development of the organization's strategic goals in collaboration with the senior leadership team.

Essential Functions

Financial Acumen

  • Supervise, coordinate, and implement all financial functions at HERS, including, but not limited to, revenues and receivables, purchasing, accounts payable, cash and investment management, and financial reporting.
  • Regularly prepare, maintain, and interpret reports and projections of budgets, market analysis, and HERS financial performance data.
  • Manage matters related to financial liquidity, working capital, endowment funds, planning, budgeting, cash flow, investment priorities, and policy.
Leadership/Management
  • Supervise finance team staff members to ensure essential operations and attainment of goals.
  • In partnership with the senior leadership team, upgrade and implement an appropriate system of financial policies, procedures, internal controls, and accounting standards.
  • Serve as primary contact with University Human Resources for general employment-related and payroll concerns and collaborate with the President on implementing the annual merit evaluation process.
  • Oversee financial performance and keep leadership team informed of fiscal accountability measures, including developing and managing budget, budget modeling and forecasting.
  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit and tax preparation processes, liaise with external auditors, vendors, and the executive committee of the board of directors; assess and implement any changes necessary.
  • Oversee business continuity efforts.
  • Review, and when applicable approve, contracts that encumber HERS.
  • Provide reports and documentation to the board, finance and audit committees as requested; effectively communicate and present critical financial matters at board of directors, committees of the board, and leadership team meetings.
  • Represent the organization externally, as necessary, particularly in financial and vendor negotiations.
  • Partner with programming and marketing teams related to program service enrollment.
  • Collaborate with HERS CRM manager and alumnae engagement staff to ensure donor contact records are up-to-date and accurate.
  • Effectively interface with all HERS constituents.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Expertise in nonprofit/higher education finance and accounting regulations
  • Discretion and discerning judgment, particularly related to finance and confidential personnel matters
  • Collaborative team player
  • Self-directed and results-oriented
  • Ability to operate as an effective tactical and strategic thinker
  • Working knowledge of financial systems including QuickBooks
  • Working knowledge of SalesForce
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience (Veterans with equivalent combination of military certification/education and experience may substitute for this qualification)
  • 5-7 years of experience in a business or administration management role
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in business or accounting
  • Master of Business Administration degree
  • Experience working in higher education or in the non-profit sector
  • 5 years of experience leading an organization's or department's budget and finance efforts
Working Environment
  • Standard office environment with occasional remote work opportunities
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate
  • Unexpected interruptions occur and stress level is moderate
Physical Activities
  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs.
Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for this position is 13.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $90,000-$105,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
