The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare is a national nonprofit leading the movement to put compassion at the heart of healthcare. Research shows that when caregivers are compassionate, patients do better and are more satisfied. Caregivers find greater meaning in their work, experiencing less stress and burnout. Hundreds of healthcare organizations in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand are Schwartz Center members, in addition to 200 sites in the U.K. and Ireland that conduct our Schwartz Rounds program. Together, we are helping hundreds of thousands healthcare professionals provide compassionate care to millions of patients. Our operational budget is funded approximately 60% by philanthropy, with funds coming from individual, corporate and foundation donors, and 40% by earned revenue, including from our membership.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and working in close collaboration with the Chief Executive Officer and other members of the senior staff, the Director of Partnerships and Policy is responsible for developing the Schwartz Center's thought leadership and advocacy agenda, building strategic partnerships, expanding programs, and developing and assessing opportunities that will further the Center's overall vision, strategic direction and growth.


  • Function as the Schwartz Center's content expert on health policy issues on a national basis, identifying and monitoring current issues and developments especially those related to caregiver mental health and compassionate care. Work with senior leadership to develop positions and/or actions on these topics.
    • Develop strategies to raise the profile of the Center in regional and national media markets to affect public policy.
    • Provide strategic advice to the organization's senior staff and leadership on ways to incorporate the issue of compassionate healthcare and other organizational priorities into current and future public policy debates.
    • Develop and maintain the Schwartz Center's business case for its programs and other initiatives.
Strategic Partnerships
  • Identify, develop and maintain strategic partnerships with healthcare and patient and family advocacy organizations interested in working with the Schwartz Center to advance compassionate care.
    • Establish collaborative, mutually respectful relationships externally with a variety of constituency groups, building professional and personal credibility and trust.
  • Collaborate with the senior leadership team to implement the strategic plan.
  • Provide program support and strategic direction regarding the Schwartz Center's work to advance equity in healthcare, including through outreach to other organizations.
Promoting Thought Leadership
  • Develop content and identify speakers for the Schwartz Center's thought leadership convenings, including the Annual Compassion in Action Healthcare Conference and Business Member Roundtables, on current and emerging issues related to compassionate healthcare.
  • Distill and disseminate key learnings in follow-up to the thought leadership convenings to the Center's member healthcare organizations, hospital and health system CEOs and senior leaders.
  • Identify and/or develop additional convening opportunities to raise awareness of the importance of compassionate healthcare and heighten the Schwartz Center's profile as a national expert on this issue.
  • Work with senior leadership team to disseminate learnings designed to educate professionals from different disciplines regarding compassionate care best practices.
  • If funded, oversee the regular fielding of a national poll on the state of compassionate care in the U.S and oversee the dissemination of the survey results.
  • Author or co-author and place opinion pieces, commentaries and perspective pieces that tie compassionate healthcare to current issues and events in the news.
  • Represent the Center at national conferences at which health policy issues affecting the patient-caregiver relationship and the provision of compassionate care are being discussed.
    • Collaborate with development and program staff to translate programs and initiatives into fundable opportunities.
  • Serve as a member of the Schwartz Center's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Workgroup.
  • In partnership with the Chief Operating Officer, oversee and help implement a comprehensive plan for equity and inclusion at the Schwartz Center.

  • A degree in health policy, health administration, public administration, business or related field.
  • A minimum of 8-10 years of progressive experience in policy, public affairs, business development or program development.
  • A master's degree in healthcare policy or business administration (preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of current healthcare issues, health policy and issues related to compassionate care and the national healthcare landscape.
  • Exceptional writing and public speaking skills.
  • Experience planning and implementing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
  • The ability to think strategically with a high degree of creativity, initiative and independent judgement.
  • Superb interpersonal skills and authentic comfort with a wide range of individuals and groups.
  • Knowledge and attentiveness to issues relating to diverse constituencies.
  • Strong management skills.
  • A customer-service approach to serving members, donors and colleagues.
  • Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented, and efficient.
  • Strong commitment to quality work, customer service, and high productivity.
  • Excellent computer skills including extensive knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively.

  • Strong commitment to quality work, customer service, and high productivity.
