The Role:

Moderna is working to develop first-in-class messenger RNA (mRNA) based medicines. We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Director to join our Nucleic Acid Process Development (NAPD) team in Norwood, MA. Reporting to the Executive Director of NA Process Development you will define and steer the mid and long-term nucleic acid process development strategy. From pre-clinical through commercialization, NAPD is accountable for nucleic acid process definition, development, characterization, scale up, and technology transfer. Our team's goal is to develop, characterize, and implement robust clinical/commercial manufacturing processes for parenteral products. You will be responsible for technical, team, and organizational leadership to advance Moderna's exciting mRNA pipeline and technology platforms.

Here's What You'll Do:

  • Lead a high-performing team, consisting of engineers and scientists to define and drive the execution of our nucleic acid process development strategy. This includes planning and hiring talent, technology investments, regulatory strategy as well as interaction with our external partners.
  • Lead the continuous maturation of our nucleic acid process development business processes
  • Lead matrixed nucleic acid process development teams to advance development, process characterization, technology transfer, and regulatory authoring of our mRNA portfolio candidates
  • Interface closely with Manufacturing Sciences and Technology (MS&T) and External Manufacturing organizations to execute and support clinical and commercial technology transfers to internal and external facilities.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders (MS&T, Mfg., Quality, Supply Chain, Clinical, LNP, etc.) to define, optimize, and maintain effective interfaces, hand-offs, and business processes
  • Provide technical and organizational mentorship to leads, scientists, and engineers
  • Advance platform and functional initiatives through direct contributions and matrixed leadership
  • Authoring and review of regulatory submissions

Here's What You'll Bring to the Table:
  • Degree in Chemical/Biomedical Engineer, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, or related discipline
  • Minimum of 10 years (PhD), 10-15 years (MS), 15-20 years (BS) industry experience in biopharmaceutical, biotechnology, or nucleic acid development
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Development Lifecycle from R&D through commercialization, including an understanding of the interdependencies of functional groups.
  • Strong Experience in nucleic acid process development and commercialization, including working closely with external CDMOs.
  • Creative/innovative/problem solver that actively drives progress
  • Passion for people management and development
  • Outstanding communication, presentation, and writing skills and ability to tailor messaging to audience.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate effectively in a dynamic, cross-functional matrix environment.
