Description

The Nebraska Department of Education is looking for SIX Disability Examiner Trainee to accumulate and evaluate medical, psychological, and vocational evidence to determine initial eligibility for disability benefits with significant assistance from other Disability Examiners.

Employees will be hired as an Adjudicator Trainee with the expectation of being promoted to an Adjudicator I after the successful completion of one year of training and on-the-job experience.

The Disability Determinations Section (DDS) works with the Social Security Administration (SSA) to decide eligibility for disability benefits. These eligibility determinations are based on medical and vocational criteria established by SSA for nationwide use.

Nebraska Department of Education employees are working from hybrid work locations. This approach includes both working in the work office and from a home office. The amount of time spent working from home or in the office is subject to supervisory approval and will be discussed at the interview.

Budgeted Salary Range:

$16.108 - $18.520 This range is based upon available budget funds. The selected candidate's skills, abilities, education, and experience will determine the salary offer within this posted range.

Examples of Work

  • Participates in extensive formal classroom training to obtain current knowledge of regulations, policies, and procedures of DDS.
  • Reviews incoming cases to determine the type and amount of documentary evidence necessary for adjudication of cases.
  • Establishes a record of requests for evidence, follow ups, receipt of evidence, and other accumulations of file notes.
  • Reads, analyzes, and files evidence (e.g. medical reports, activities of daily living, vocational reports).
  • Evaluates all evidence in case files to assess severity and duration of impairment, residual functional capacity, and future opportunity to engage in work activities.
  • Prepares written reports to support medical decisions and paperwork for adjudication.
  • Possesses a valid driver's license, travels independently, and works in a variety of settings.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Establishes and fosters strategic partnerships with physicians, clinics, hospitals, and other medical providers.
  • Approves payments and forwards billing.

Qualifications / Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree. Any equivalent education and\or work experience may be substituted in order to meet the minimum qualifications of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g. Health Services Management, Medical Assisting, Medical Office Management, Social Work, Human Services) and previous experience in case management and analyzing medical information.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Formats used in written business communications.
  • English grammar, spelling, and composition needed for correspondence.
  • Computer software necessary to carry out job responsibilities.
  • Types and uses of office equipment.
  • Office management principles, methods, and procedures.
  • Established policies, procedures, practices of the Nebraska Department of Education.

Abilities:

  • Maintain and organize information within prescribed systems and procedures.
  • Caseload processing principles and procedures.
  • Communicate orally and in writing with agency staff and the public.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Maintain the confidential nature of information.
  • Understand, interpret, and apply rules, administrative policies, and program guidelines.
  • Operate office equipment necessary to perform the required duties.
