About UMass Amherst

UMass Amherst, the Commonwealth's flagship campus, is a nationally ranked public research university offering a full range of undergraduate, graduate and professional degrees. The University sits on nearly 1,450-acres in the scenic Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, and offers a rich cultural environment in a bucolic setting close to major urban centers. In addition, the University is part of the Five Colleges (including Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, and Smith College), which adds to the intellectual energy of the region.

Job Description:

The Economics Department of the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a tenure-system appointment at the level of Assistant Professor in Economics of Race and Ethnicity or Stratification Economics, expected to start on September 1st, 2022. Under exceptional circumstances, candidates at other ranks may receive consideration. The primary research area would focus on racial inequalities and/or social hierarchies based on group identity. Complementary fields are open and could include labor, education, health, gender, political economy, macroeconomics, environment/energy/climate, or other relevant fields.

The Economics faculty members at UMass Amherst work in diverse areas from both heterodox and mainstream approaches. The faculty studies economic theory and applied economics related to multiple dimensions of human well-being and social welfare; how economic opportunities are generated and distributed in society; the interplay between power and institutions and between economic behavior and the performance of the economy.

Requirements:

A Ph.D. in Economics or a related field by the start date of the appointment. Candidates will be judged on their scholarly research as well as teaching. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Application Instructions:

Applicants are required to apply through the UMass online application system, unless unable to do so.

Applicants should submit:

  1. A letter of interest addressed to Professor James Heintz, Chair, Department of Economics, Crotty Hall, 412 North Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA 01002 USA
  2. Curriculum vitae
  3. One recent research paper
  4. Evidence of teaching effectiveness
  5. Names and contact information for three references who are willing to submit letters upon request, through the UMass online applications system

In addition to the materials noted above, applicants should also submit a one-page diversity statement that discusses: the candidate's skills, experiences and commitment to teaching and mentoring diverse and historically underrepresented student populations; professional service that assists in achieving equity, inclusion, and diversity; and how the candidate's past or future research addresses fundamental questions important to a diverse and global society.

Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2021, and continue until the position is filled. Candidates may interview at the ASSA meeting (January 2020) and are encouraged to use AEA signaling. Questions can be addressed to Economics Department at hiring@econs.umass.edu.

The University is committed to active recruitment of a diverse faculty and student body. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer of women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities and encourages applications from these and other protected group members. Because broad diversity is essential to an inclusive climate and critical to the University's goals of achieving excellence in all areas, we will holistically assess the many qualifications of each applicant and favorably consider an individual's record working with students and colleagues with broadly diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds in educational, research or other work activities. We will also favorably consider experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career and degree.
