Position Overview

Are you someone with embedded electronic development experience? Please read further. Hypertherm Associates is seeking an embedded design engineer for our Light Industrial Business (LIB) team. As an embedded engineer, you will be responsible for developing hardware and firmware solutions to bring world-class plasma cutting products to the marketplace. You will apply and integrate the company's core technology to meet specific end-user requirements through design, development, testing, and production implementation. You will also research and prototype protocols for connecting our product to smart factory networks, becoming an IoT specialist that will be an influential center of knowledge within Hypertherm. You will work closely with multiple disciplines in a team-based environment to deliver value to our customers. You should also possess confidence in researching and developing solutions independently to proactively answer unknowns.

Who you are and the experience you bring:

  • Closely communicate within engineering and cross-functional design teams to provide value-added solutions that meet end user needs.
  • Develop and implement embedded electronic designs for systems, subassemblies, and related products including basic power supply circuitry, embedded controls, user interfaces, and board to board communications.
  • Independently develop embedded firmware for DSPs/microcontrollers in C language. The result is intended for production and commercial deployment and must meet quality objectives, engineering methodologies, and company guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain system and software documentation including requirements, specifications, user guides and flow charts. Utilize coding style best disciplines and practices for readability, including meaningful commenting.
  • Create schematics and develop BOMs for embedded circuitry. Partner with PCB designer to create layouts and with documentation team to create electronic subassembly drawings.
  • Generate test plans and work with technicians to qualify designs. Properly maintain test reports and documentation.
  • Proactively address hardware and firmware issues, utilizing strong debug skills to resolve problems systematically and creatively.
  • Independently research and prototype communication protocols for factory and machine connectivity.
Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience
  • B.S. in Software or Electrical Engineering
  • 3+ years' experience as a hardware and embedded firmware developer for new product development.
  • Proficiency with C code and basic knowledge of assembly code
  • Hands on experience in circuit design, component selection and schematic generation
  • Hands on experience in embedded system debugging and test equipment usage (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.)
  • Expertise in microcontroller and DSP-based system design utilizing peripherals including GPIO, RTC, ADC, PWM, I2C, SPI, UART, USB
  • Solid communication skills and ability to work well with cross-functional team members.
Preferred experience that differentiates you:
  • Advanced degree, additional coursework and certifications
  • Experience with Internet of Things (IoT) development
  • Experience implementing communication protocols such as TCP/IP and EtherCAT network.
  • Knowledge of machine to machine protocols such as MTConnect and OPC/UA
  • Experience developing software applications for platforms (Windows, Linux, Android, iOS) with programming skills in C++, Java, .NET, Python, or database
  • Experience with data structure, digital signal processing and digital control algorithms including digital filter and PID regulator implementations
  • Experience with Altium PCB Design software

$70,595.17-$117,655.87 AnnualThis is the base pay range that an applicant can expect to make upon hire.
Pay within this range will vary based upon relevant experience, skills, and education among other factors.
