Position Summary

Working as a strategic partner with production staff, provide skilled services to achieve desired environmental management priorities for your Division quarries, sand plants, and underground mines. Responsibilities include but are not limited to local, state and federal permitting and reporting, environmental plan development (SWPPP, SPCC, etc.), employee training, regulatory and corporate policy compliance, audits and inspections of sites. Additional duties include: ongoing improvement related to air/water/land quality, wetlands, floodplains, water appropriation and associated environmental media; assist with mine planning and real estate management.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the plant's team and when required consultants to ensure environmental regulatory compliance in the facility
  • Interface as the company advocate for environmental issues with regulatory agencies that have jurisdiction for the plant
  • Manage the plant's environmental budget
  • Assist in planning and implementation of projects to meet environmental requirements
  • Manage an environmental system across the plant operations
  • Investigate and resolve potential compliance issues, questions, or complaints received from within the company, customers, regulatory agencies and/or the public
  • Evaluate environmental compliance and ensure effective implementation of corrective actions
  • Ensure all environmental sampling, monitoring, reporting, permit renewals and record retention is successfully completed. Ensure compliance requirements are met through organizational and procedural measures
  • Train plan personnel and contractors on relevant environmental issues and regulations, including related company policies
  • Maintain a high level knowledge of Federal, state and local regulations
  • Successfully complete training provided
  • Perform due diligence investigations
  • Regularly evaluate Martin Marietta's environmental compliance and effectively communicate issues of non-compliance to management
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as environmental, scientific, or engineering discipline. Master's degree preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of environmental experience in the aggregate, RMC, mining, or similar industry
  • High level of knowledge of Federal, State/Province, and local environmental and land use laws and regulations
  • Working knowledge of all environmental laws and regulations affecting aggregate production, ready mix concrete manufacturing, asphalt manufacturing and cement manufacturing
  • Tactfulness enabling the independent audit and inspection of industrial operations and inspections of industrial operations, identify compliant and non-compliant issues and assertively communicate findings to management, as well as employees performing the associated tasks
  • Experience and demonstrated ability managing a multi-faceted environmental program including air and water quality, hazardous waste and materials, biological species issues, mining reclamation, soil/water remediation
  • Ability to independently learn and understand technical, regulatory and external issues regarding the environmental programs at the plant
  • Ability to positively interact with regulatory agencies to ensure understanding of requirements and obtain achievable compliance requirements
  • Ability to independently develop, lead and implement effective environmental and management systems to ensure full compliance
  • Ability to effectively communicate and implement systems required compliance activities to plant employees who are tasked with performing them
  • Microsoft Office proficiency
Preferred Experience and Skills
  • Experience creating environmental permit applications and reports for submittal to external parties including regulatory agencies
Work Environment
  • Role operates primarily in an office environment but does require conducting business at manufacturing locations and job sites where the conditions include moving mechanical equipment, inclement weather, heat, humidity and elevated noise levels
