Position Overview

The Environmental & Sustainability Internship shall assist to ensure the environmental compliance of the Company's activities and implementation of sustainability initiatives. It also assists in the management of the Company's land assets. The individual will interact with all levels of Company personnel and consultants. The position will work under the direction and guidance of the Environmental & Land Manager and will need to be self-motivated and at times work unsupervised.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

  • Assist in the timely and accurate submittal of all applicable land and environmental permit applications and permit renewals in accordance Federal, State, and Local regulations.
  • Participate as a company representative during the permitting process.
  • Assist in the implementation of the Company's Environmental Policies and Programs.
  • Assist in the implementation of the Company's Sustainability Initiatives.
  • Monitor changes as well as proposed changes in applicable Federal, State, and Local legislation and regulations and assist with developing implementation strategies to meet any new requirements.
  • Develop, organize, and conduct environmental training for the Company's employees.
  • Perform the timely and accurate filing of all internal and external reporting obligations related to Federal, State and Local environmental and land permitting.
  • Data entry and recordkeeping related to Federal, State and Local environmental and land permitting requirements.
  • Participate in appropriate industry organizations.
  • Inspect the Company's operations to ensure environmental compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations, and Company policies and best practices.
  • Assist with environmental testing and monitoring.
  • Update plans (SWP3, SPCC, HazWaste) as necessary.
  • Assist in managing land assets
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, the general public, and regulatory authorities at all times.
  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.
  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.
  • Report to the assigned job site and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures.
  • Strict adherence to Company policies and procedures.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Adhere to any and all state and federal regulations, if applicable, as set forth by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), or any other regulatory agency.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) from a four-year college or university. Degree required in environmental sciences, or engineering. Previous related experience is not necessary but is desired.

General Requirements
  • Ability to read, analyze, and apply federal, state, and local statutes. Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with the legal and regulatory community. Ability to read and interpret deeds, surveys, and other land related instruments. Ability to write correspondence and reports, prepare regulatory applications, and effectively present information and respond to inquiries from parties within the internal and external environments.
  • Ability to define, formulate strategies, and execute policy to effectively solve problems and enhance decision making capabilities. Ability to establish sound policies. Ability to interpret a variety of instruments furnished in written, oral, plan, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must be able to work independently and meet strict deadlines.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.
