SUMMARY
The Epidemiologist supports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Tribal Support Section (TSS) to provide essential technical assistance to support state, tribal, local and territorial jurisdictions to mitigate the impact of COVID-19. This position requires an epidemiologist experienced working with tribes; experience working on an emergency response is preferred. Travel is expected 50-75% of the month to work directly with tribes/tribal entities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties maybe assigned.

Designs, plans and initiates epidemiologic studies, surveys and investigations.

Evaluates data collection, quality control and data utilization methods used to study epidemiological problems and issues.

Evaluates existing surveillance systems to determine if they meet goals and objectives for identifying influenza virus infections.

Uses surveillance data to understand COVID-19-associated hospital and outpatient burden, as well as economic costs.

Assists with correlation and evaluation of control measures during outbreaks.

Develops and evaluates novel strategies for improving protection among tribal entities/populations.

Identifies and troubleshoots problems with data quality (e.g., completeness, transmission and discrepancies) from a surveillance network to examine the burden of influenza.

Creates and manages laboratory and epidemiology study databases, trains users and develops manuals.

Develops analytic codes for merging and analyzing network surveillance data for statistical analyses.

Conducts systematic reviews of literature to understand factors that influence COVID-19-associated hospitalizations among tribal population.

Works with Indian Health Service (IHS) to identify potential risks associated with the spread of COVID-19.

Identifies and develops culturally respectful mitigation strategies to reduce the risk of virus transmission.

Deploys to the field as needed to support issues, outbreaks, etc. Prepares and submits situation reports while on deployment and upon completion of deployment.

Summarizes findings in tables, figures and maps and communicates information. Successfully communicates with all levels of an organization with clear, appropriate, comprehensive communications.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to any training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor's instruction in such a way as to maximize output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and Human Resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions as the best of own ability.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree (M.P.H or M.B.A preferred) in an academic field relating to Health Sciences, Allied Sciences or related fields of study in Biological Sciences and a minimum of five (5) years' hands-on experience working in a public health setting. CDC experience a plus. Experience working with Tribal entities required. RN preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to perform successfully the essential functions of this job. Work is performed both in an office environment as well as in the field that involves everyday risks and discomforts and sometime adverse weather conditions requiring safety precautions. Physical requirements include lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds occasionally. Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling or working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. Regularly required to reach with hands and arms, occasionally above head. Ability to speak and hear. May work in an environment where there is a heavy traffic, construction, rugged terrain, and hazardous environmental conditions. May work in an environment with exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals or blood borne pathogens. May work near moving or mechanical parts with risk of electrical shock. May be required to wear safety and personal protective equipment.
