Reporting to the Dean, the Executive Director is responsible for all aspects of Vantage Ventures, housed within the John Chambers College of Business and Economics. The incumbent will be the key leader for driving the on-going development of our center.  Vantage Ventures has multiple goals, the first is support of the acceleration of high tech/innovation related businesses that can be advanced through intense and targeted coaching, education, and financial resources. Additionally, Vantage Ventures will serve the communities of West Virginia by supporting the development of businesses and non-profits that will advance the state’s economy, forming the right setup for start-ups to only be mined and developed from within the research and innovation enterprise of WVU, but from across the state of West Virginia, the Appalachian region, the nation and the world.

What you'll do:
  • Work with and create a network within WVU and WV to support a startup culture
  • Provide leadership and oversight of all programming offered by Vantage Ventures
  • Provide leadership for the cultivation of new clients and the overall management of the client pipeline
  • Lead recruitment, selection, and onboarding of client cohorts
  • Represent Vantage Ventures in public forums and conferences
  • Select and continually monitor and assess the curriculum delivered
  • Oversee all staff, the community-based curriculum, and the co-working space
  • Manage innovation project groups and committees
  • Work with college leadership, IDEA ecosystem to create an effective advisory
  • Maintain and enhance alumni portfolio network relationships
  • Build new and nurture existing relationships with key partners – ranging from corporate, investor, university, government, and economic development
  • Oversee the events, such as pitch events, guest speakers, networking events, and demo days
  • Work with the university and other units to support an entrepreneurial pipeline
  • Work with the college’s Strategic Communications office to highlight and market successes and expertise of Vantage Ventures
  • Other duties as assigned


Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered
  • 10 years' experience in professional business/industry required
  • 10 years' experience in startups, funding, corporate relations, or related area required
  • 2-3 years' experience in training and development
  • Ability and interest to be innovative, strategic and thoughtful about multiple constituents and projects
  • Expertise in funding options for start-ups
  • Experience with investors
  • Familiarity with all level business career fields, job functions and industries
  • Demonstrated ability to foster positive relationships with multiple diverse professional constituencies
  • Flawless attention to detail and accuracy
  • Demonstrated record and interest in project and relationship ownership and responsibility/management
  • Proven self-started with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to navigate the corporate structure of fortune 200 companies and larger organizations. Additionally, to interface with the corporate executives providing superior professional representation of the college
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including skill in large group presentations
  • Strong ability to function in a computerized environment
  • High level customer service experience, including the ability to independently solve complex and time sensitive problems
  • Ability to maintain composure, professionalism, and a positive attitude during lengthy periods of high volume, intensive work
  • Flexible and comfortable with change
