Per Diem Exercise Physiologist

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Within a clinical research setting, conducts a wide array of assessments for muscle function, physical performance, and aerobic capacity on individuals participating in research studies that investigate function promoting therapies. Tests are administered to different subgroups including healthy younger and older men and women, as well as those with mobility limitation, spinal cord injury, and chronic diseases including endocrine disorders, obesity, HIV infection, and cancer. Experience in clinical research setting and prior training in administering cardiopulmonary exercise testing preferred. Conducts exercise training sessions that implement specific research protocols and performs other related duties as needed. Works under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Performs appropriate tests to assess muscle strength, power, and endurance.

2. Performs physical function assessments such as stair climbing, timed walk tests, load carrying, Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), and related tests of physical function and mobility.

3. Performs vital sign assessments including resting heart rate and blood pressure.

4. Performs submaximal and maximal cardiopulmonary exercise tests that include measurement of gas exchange variables and the electrocardiogram.

5. Executes pre-assessment preparations including equipment set up and calibration, preparation of data collection sheets, review of medical and exercise history.

6. Accurately and legibly records data from laboratory assessments.

7. Ensures laboratory equipment is in working order and is properly calibrated and always maintained.

8. Maintains laboratory facility to ensure cleanliness and safety including special precautions against COVID-19 transmission.

9. Monitors inventory of all equipment and supplies; notifies supervisor when supplies are low or if equipment is malfunctioning.

10. Advises and assists in purchase of supplies and equipment.

11. Assists with scheduling subject appointments.

12. Greets and aids visitors, patients, and employees in a professional and courteous manner.

13. Attends and participates in meetings and/or committees, as required.

14. Assists the laboratory staff in data gathering and analysis and in manuscript preparation.

15. Maintains confidentiality about patient information and other sensitive information

16. Develops and implements measures to improve efficiency in laboratory operations.

17. Acts as a resource for members of the Research Program in Men's Health, Aging, and Metabolism.

18. Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights.

19. Ensures that the culture of excellence at BWH is maintained in interactions with all encountered.

20. Utilizes hospital's values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the Men's Health and the hospital's mission.

21. Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

22. Ensures professional growth and development through participation in conferences and educational workshops and maintaining knowledge of exercise testing and training standards and practices.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

• Demonstrated experience in conducting assessments of muscle performance, e.g., strength, power, fatigability, and physical function.

• Proficiency in measuring vital signs at rest and during exercise.

• Knowledge and experience in the operation of instruments and equipment for assessing muscle performance, physical function, and aerobic capacity with treadmills, cycle ergometers, and indirect calorimetry,

• Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

• Ability to perform basic statistical analyses

• Ability to perform multiple tasks and to prioritize duties.

• Ability to be flexible about work assignments.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and interest in performing new and varied work assignments.

• Cultural sensitivity and comfort with diverse social, racial, ethnic, and gender populations

• Ability to maintain confidentiality.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES DESIRED:

• Experience with exercise training for spinal cord injured individuals

• Experience in instructing and monitoring a variety of exercise training modalities.

• General research experience

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: All applicants must meet the following minimal qualifications, skills, abilities, and competencies to be considered for the position.

• A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, or related field required.

• Minimum of 6 months work experience that includes skeletal muscle performance and physical function testing, administration of cardiopulmonary exercise tests that include measurement of gas exchange variables in healthy men and women as well as special populations that include older adults with and without mobility limitation, spinal cord injury, and chronic diseases including endocrine disorders, obesity, HIV infection, and cancer.

BLS required. ACLS certification obtained within 6 months of hire.
