Job Summary

Provide chair side assistance to faculty dentists of various specialties in the IUSD faculty practice.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

- Take patient blood pressure and review medical history form prior to procedures. Enter charting into electronic health record. Provide chairside assistance to dentist during procedures, including passing of instruments, use of high-volume evacuation and saliva ejector, and preparation and passing of dental materials. Take alginate impressions and pour impressions with stone in laboratory.

- Under supervision, and with appropriate training, perform expanded dental assistant functions when indicated. Fabricate temporary crowns and temporary restorations, adjust and seat with temporary cements. Place dental dams prior to restorations. Place and remove matrix retainers for alloy and composite restorations. Place resin and amalgam restorations. Finish and polish restorations and adjust patient bite.

- Prepare patients by providing general information regarding their procedures. Provide preoperative and postoperative care to patients.

- Ensure that equipment used for dental procedures is sterilized and areas are clean and ready to receive new patients. Assist front office in scheduling follow up visits.

- Take diagnostic digital radiographs.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and completion of an accredited dental assisting program including expanded functions dental assisting certificate; OR two years of expanded functions duties dental assisting experience.

X-ray license.

Knowledge of dental and medical terms. Attention to detail to properly set-up all necessary instruments, materials and supplies for procedure. Ability to work in a busy clinic with many interruptions. Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation. Ability to effectively communicate and exchange information. Knowledge of dentistry. Ability to interact daily with patients, co-workers and doctors. Ability to follow service standards.

Preferred Qualifications

Expanded Functions Certification.

Working Conditions / Demands

Majority of time spent in a stationary position including being chairside for dental procedures. Must be able to operate dental instruments and handle dental materials. Must be able to operate a computer and enter information into software for patient charts. 25 pound weight limit for pushing and 50 pound weight limit for lifting. May need to assist patient into moving into and out of dental chair. May need to hold patient in place by restricting head, jaw or body movements, sometimes for extended periods. Carry supplies and instruments to dental units. Regular attendance is required. Up-to-date immunizations and annual TB test required.
