The Flow Cytometry Core Facility in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia is looking for a Flow Cytometry Core Specialist. The Flow Cytometry facility services multiple departments and operates state of the art cutting-edge technology within the School of Medicine. We are looking for a team player with an understanding of Flow Cytometry and the ability to operate both analytical and sorting instrumentation for faculty and scientists using the Flow Cytometry Core Facility.

Flow Cytometry Expertise:

  • Must be able to independently operate analytical and cell sorter flow cytometers while working with a wide range of clients and experiments.
  • Ability to operate all analytical flow cytometers; Experience with FACSCaliburs, Attune NxT, Imagestream MKII, Fortessa, and Aurora analytical flow cytometers preferred. Knowledge of CyTOF mass spec cytometry a plus.
  • Independent operation of cell sorters; Experience on the BD Influx, BD Aria, or Sony MA900 preferred.
  • Experience performing Luminex Bead based assays and protocols a plus.

Customer Service:

  • Ability to assist clients with data analysis and interpretation using various software packages; FCSExpress, IDEAS, FlowJo, OMIQ, Astrolabe and other flow cytometry data analysis packages.
  • Assist clients with the design of flow cytometry experiments, including appropriate choice of instrumentation as well as fluorochromes appropriate for the experiment

Instrument Maintenance:

  • Ability to perform daily and monthly QC on core instrumentation. Interpret and report deviations of QC. Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of core instrumentation.

Teaching and Education:

  • Assist Lab Director and Staff in the delivery of Flow Cytometry Training Courses, and Workshops.
  • Plan and develop new technologies and new applications for flow cytometry.
  • Stay current with new technologies and developments in the flow community through research, attendance of conferences, and workshops.
  • Ability to effectively train and communicate with clients on the use of flow cytometry analyzers, cell sorters, and data analysis interpretation.

General Lab Skills:

  • Perform calculations for preparation of lab solutions and reagents.
  • Comprehensive understanding of scientific principles.
  • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
  • Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Physics, Biochemistry, Immunology or appropriate related Life Science

Experience: Total of 6 years of laboratory experience, 4 years' experience must be in Flow Cytometry data acquisition/analysis. Preferred 1 year Cell sorting experience. Master's degree in related field may substitute for required experience. 9 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Licensure: SCYM Certification preferred or expected within first year of hire.
