As the community center of the University, the Illini Union draws together all members of the University with approximately 16,000 visits of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests on a daily basis. Job Summary

Under the direction of a Food Administrator II, this position helps develop and manage a Starbucks retail stores for the Illini Union. They will assist the Food Administrator II in executing store operations in order to deliver service to students and the campus community in support of the overall mission of the Illini Union.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in managing the operations of the Starbucks retail store including the development of sales plans, strategies, and tactics. Helps to analyze and identify opportunities for business growth.
  • Helps to manage inventory levels for merchandise using sales reports, inventory records, and turnover figures to maximize sales while maintaining adequate stock levels.
  • Demonstrates a calm demeanor during periods of high volume or unusual events and manages smooth transitions thereafter to keep store operating to standard and to set a positive example for the store team.
  • Works with vendors to secure food and beverage products and supplies needed for retail store items.
  • Maintains records to keep up-to-date equipment for best results and performance in all areas.
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate records. Provides necessary billing documents to designated departments. Assists in the preparation of reports, including annual report, of the Starbucks retail operation, and recommends methods for improvement.
  • Displays a "customer comes first" attitude by training and holding partners accountable for delivering legendary customer service.
  • Assists in driving the implementation of company programs by helping to develop action plans and directly motivating and instructing the store team to implement them to meet operational and organizational objectives.
  • Plans, identifies, communicates, and delegates appropriate responsibilities and practices to store employees to ensure smooth flow of operations
  • Provides coaching and direction to the store team to act and to achieve operational goals. Constantly reviews store environment and key business indicators to identify problems, concerns, and opportunities for improvement to provide coaching and direction to the store team to achieve operational goals.
  • Assists the Food Administrator II in monitoring and managing store staffing levels to ensure proper partner development and talent acquisition to achieve and maintain store operational requirements.
  • Utilizes existing tools to identify and prioritize communications and regularly uses discretion to filter communications to the store team. Communicates clearly, concisely and accurately in order to ensure effective store operations.
  • Solicits customer feedback to understand customer needs and the needs of the university and local community.
  • Actively manages employees by regularly conducting performance assessments, providing feedback, and setting challenging goals to improve employee performance.
  • Utilizes management information tools and analyzes financial reports to identify and address trends and issues in store performance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that support the mission of the Illini Union.
  • Additional Physical Demands
    • Most work will be accomplished in a typical retail work environment. A great deal of moving between the retail area and storage areas is required.
    • Long periods of time behind the counter during busy hours may be a physical strain.
    • Hours of work are as necessary to accomplish the position's assigned responsibilities. Extended work hours with abbreviated lunches and breaks are required during the peak periods.
    • Work on evenings and weekends will be required.
    • Must be able to work under pressure in stressful situations and be able to work on numerous projects simultaneously.

    Minimum Qualifications

    High school diploma or equivalent.
    Any one or combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the categories below:
    Coursework in business, dietetics, culinary arts, food science, nutrition, hospitality, hotel, catering, restaurant, or institutional management, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:
    30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
    Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
    90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
    Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
    Food service supervisory work experience.

    Preferred Qualifications
    Minimum of two years of supervisory experience in retail operations, University training in Business, Hospitality or related field may be substituted for up to one year of experience

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Extensive cash handling as well as familiarity with point of sale cash register systems.
  • Experience with inventory control is necessary.
  • Strong knowledge of sanitation procedures to ensure clean machines, proper rotation of food products, and safe food handling procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of people - work with diverse student, faculty, staff, and general public in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of and experience with merchandising and promotional advertising.
  • Strong working knowledge of Point of Sale systems in order to effectively process raw sales information into cogent sales reports to effectively marshal resources
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Appointment Information
    This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 0036 - Food Service Administrator I position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 1/3/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
