Job Info

At Meta's Reality Labs Research, our goal is to make world-class consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Research Scientist to join our team, whose mission is to create the future of soft, wearable technology. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in researching novel means of characterizations of wearable technologies and who can work with a team of researchers who are enabling new architectures for wearables. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Hardware Research Scientist, Wearables Responsibilities:

  • Identify needs, design, fabricate and validate characterization systems as required by novel wearable actuation and sensing research.
  • Set up first principles-based analysis for various wearable Hardware Research efforts including mechanical, thermal and electrical energy.
  • Build complex contact mechanics models that involve consideration of large deformation, surface roughness, adhesion and multi-phase physics.
  • Derive governing equations for multi-physics processes and solve the equations with analytical or numerical methods.
  • Apply rigorous physics and engineering analysis in the areas of contact and interface physics.
  • Partner with research, hardware engineering, and design teams to create and test novel wearable AR/VR devices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
  • Ph.D. in the field of Mechanical Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Physics or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience in deriving governing equations for complex contact/interface problems that require multi-physics coupling.
  • 1+ years of experience with numerical methods, such as finite element and finite volume.
  • 2+ years of experience with a programming language, such as Python, Matlab, C or C++.
  • Experience with designing and building prototypes/experiments of wearable systems to validate research hypothesis.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with skin-device contact modeling, design, build and validation.
  • Experience with Haptic actuation and systems.
  • Track record of achieving results, including first-authored journal publications
