Position Summary: The University Library at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is seeking an entrepreneurial, collaborative, innovative, self-starting and intellectually curious individual to serve as the Mathematics and Computational Sciences Librarian. The individual in this role will work closely with two major colleges, the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and Grainger College of Engineering, and have the opportunity to contribute as major building renovations and interdisciplinary programs in data science are launched. Specifically, the person in this position will serve as the Head of the Mathematics Library, housed in historic Altgeld Hall in the heart of campus, and provide instruction and outreach to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Additionally, the individual will provide instruction and outreach to Computational Science and Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Grainger College of Engineering. As the UIUC campus undertakes a major renovation of Altgeld Hall, including the Mathematics Library, and builds a neighboring data sciences facility with a strong engineering presence, this is a truly unique opportunity for a talented, forward-thinking Librarian to continue UIUC's trend of implementing cutting edge library services.
As Head of the Mathematics Library, the Mathematics and Computational Sciences Librarian will directly oversee that library's operations, its staff, collections, and library initiatives. Given interconnected services and patron bases, Mathematics and Computational Sciences Librarian will work closely and collegially with the Head of the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center. Additionally, as a member of the University Library's Physical Science and Engineering Division (PSED), the Mathematics and Computational Sciences Librarian will also collaborate with other PSED Librarians to advance services, initiatives, and partnerships as determined by strategic goals.
Responsibilities
• Oversee the development of the collection for the Mathematics Library and w ork with other PSED division libraries to support collection development.
• Oversee general operations and lead initiatives in the Mathematics Library.
• Build relationships with the faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students within Mathematics, Statistics, Computational Science and Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical and Computer Engineering.
• Develop and manage collections in all formats in the areas of responsibility and work closely with faculty to establish collection priorities.
• Provide instruction based upon pedagogical best practices and innovations that reflect the needs of the disciplines.
• Consult with stakeholders to implement and improve best practices for library services on areas including data management, open access publishing, and other innovative research services.
• Collaborate with faculty to customize curricular innovations that support student success (both in and out of the classroom).
• Collaborate with initiatives in the Grainger Engineering Library Information Center as needed.
• Maintain an active research portfolio that advances the discipline of library and information science.
• Participate in service to the profession via both internal and external opportunities.
• Contribute to the national and international reputation of the University Library through professional research, service and collaboration with national colleagues, organizations, and consortia.
Qualifications
Required:
• Master's Degree in Library and Information Science or an advanced degree in a relevant subject area,
• Experience providing research or reference support,
• Demonstrated experience collaborating with diverse groups and populations,
• Evidence of the ability to conduct scholarly research and work to meet the requirements for promotion and tenure,
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively,
• Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and participate in collaborative endeavors.
Preferred:
• Experience providing reference or research support services to mathematics, engineering, or related computational disciplines in an academic library,
• Undergraduate degree or coursework in mathematics, statistics, engineering, or computational sciences,
• Demonstrated experience making and delivering teaching materials for students of all demographics,
• Demonstrated supervisory and management experience,
• Demonstrated experience building and managing research collections in all formats,
• Experience overseeing library spaces and programs,
• Exposure to programming or other computational tools,
• Evidence of research, professional service, and publications sufficient to merit appointment at the level of tenured Associate or Full Professor.
Appointment Information
Position Available: This position is available as soon as possible and eligible for a hybrid work schedule. This is a 100%-time, permanent, twelve-month faculty position in the University Library.
Salary and Rank: Minimum starting salary for this faculty position in the library is $60,000 and is commensurate with credentials and experience.
Librarians have faculty rank, and must demonstrate excellence in librarianship, research, and university/professional/community service in order to meet university standards for tenure and promotion. Library faculty have an obligation to remain professionally informed, to pursue the discovery of new knowledge related to their field of expertise, to disseminate the results of their scholarly work, and to seek opportunities for service to the Library, campus, state, nation, and profession. Building: The iconic Altgeld Hall is home to the Mathematics Library. UIUC is the beginning stages of a project to restore and renovate Altgeld Hall and replace its neighbor, Illini Hall, with a new building to house a state-of-the-art data science center. Current estimates are that Altgeld Hall exterior renovations will start in early 2023 with interior renovations begun in 2024 and construction completed in 2026. The renovation of Altgeld and a new Illini Hall will provide students and faculty collaborative spaces that are essential for learning and discovery in the 21st century and make both buildings accessible to all students. The Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, opened in 1994, is located in the center of engineering activity on campus at the north end of the Bardeen Quad. It is the primary Library unit serving the Grainger College of Engineering, which is consistently regarded as one of the top 5 engineering programs in the country.

The Physical Science and Engineering Division (PSED) serves the information needs of the academic programs related to the physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering, including the new engineering-based Medical School and National Cancer Center. The division includes the Chemistry Library, Geology Virtual Library, Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, Mathematics Library, Physics & Astronomy Virtual Library, and Research Data Service. Individuals affiliated with PSED have a long history of working closely and collaboratively to best serve units and patrons associated with the individual libraries .
Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non-cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
