Position Summary:

This role will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining robust health and safety governance frameworks, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with legal requirements, industry best practices, and organizational objectives. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to drive a culture of safety, mitigate risks, and promote continuous improvement in health and safety practices across the organization.

Works with the Vice President of Health and Safety, H&S staff, and site managers at assigned locations to promote the health, safety and well-being of company employees. Provides technical and management expertise necessary for the development and implementation of effective safety programs and processes to prevent occupational injuries and illnesses and to prevent harm to equipment, property, the environment and the public. Works to promote and maintain compliance with applicable laws and regulations. This is accomplished through the application of the company's health and safety management system (HSMS) and the use of the fundamental principles of industrial hygiene and safety. Plays a key role in the development and delivery of health and safety management systems and training programs. Exposed to confidential information requiring appropriate discretion. Works from company policies and objectives established through the corporate goal process, written H&S policies/procedures, and collaboration with the corporate director/manager of health and safety. Confers frequently with supervisor to maintain open communication and seeks clarification or interpretations of organizational policy when questions arise.

Travel is expected to be approximately 25% and may be seasonal. Most travel will involve at least one overnight stay but for locations that are farther away, travel may be longer, particularly when auditing is taking place or when attending conferences.

What you'll be contributing:

Develop and implement health and safety governance frameworks, policies, and procedures in alignment with applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards including but not limited to ISO 45001. System Development:

  • Research and understand the requirements of ISO 45001:2018 standard.
  • Analyze the organization's current health and safety management system and identify gaps and areas for improvement.
  • Develop a detailed implementation plan for adopting the ISO 45001 standard.
  • Design and develop the necessary documentation, including policies, procedures, and work instructions, to meet ISO 45001 requirements.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the effectiveness of the system.
Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification:
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments and hazard identification processes across the organization.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather information on workplace hazards, assess risks, and prioritize control measures.
  • Develop methodologies and tools for ongoing hazard identification and risk assessment.
  • Implement processes to evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of control measures.
Learning and Development:
  • Develop and deliver training programs on ISO 45001 requirements and the organization's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Raise awareness among employees regarding their roles and responsibilities in the health and safety management system.
  • Collaborate with relevant departments to ensure appropriate training is provided to employees, supervisors, and managers.
Documentation and Record-Keeping:
  • Establish a document control system to ensure the proper maintenance, distribution, and control of documented information related to the ISO 45001 system.
  • Develop processes for the creation, approval, review, and update of documents and records.
  • Implement a record-keeping system to maintain records of incidents, inspections, audits, and corrective actions.
Internal Audits and Management Review:
  • Plan and conduct internal audits to assess the organization's compliance with ISO 45001 requirements.
  • Prepare audit reports and communicate findings to relevant stakeholders.
  • Support the management review process by providing relevant data, analysis, and recommendations for improvement.
Continuous Improvement:
  • Monitor and measure the performance of the health and safety management system against established KPIs.
  • Analyze data and identify areas for improvement in the system's effectiveness.
  • Facilitate the implementation of corrective and preventive actions to address non-conformities and improve health and safety performance.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging employee engagement and participation in health and safety initiatives.
Regulatory Compliance:
  • Stay up to date with relevant health and safety laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Ensure the organization's health and safety practices comply with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
Performs other duties as assigned according to the needs of the business

What you'll need to be successful in this role:

  • Bachelor's degree required in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, science, engineering, or closely related field.
  • Masters Degree In a related field preferred
  • CSP, CRSP, CMIOSH, CIH preferred
  • 7 years of experience in Mining / heavy manufacturing in a steadily progressing H&S position
  • Knowledge of the principles of health and safety management systems, injury and illness prevention, training development, hazard recognition, risk assessment/risk management, and human and organizational performance.
  • Extensive working knowledge of all applicable MSHA and OSHA regulations as well as other applicable state and federal regulations regarding health and safety activities.
